HOT STREAK CONTINUES AS FLYERS EARN OVERTIME VICTORY AGAINST BLUES - JANUARY 13

Jordan Peters' hot streak continued this afternoon as he scored a pair of goals and added an assist in regulation, while Nate Breden played the overtime hero for the second time this season against the Winnipeg South Blues as the Orange and Black extended their point streak to six games with a 6-5 win.

Despite finding themselves shorthanded early in the contest, that didn't deter the Flyers from creating chances offensively. Just moments after Breden nearly opened the scoring on a shorthanded breakaway, Stefan Schneider broke in alone on Blues netminder Justin Cote. However, he was hauled down before getting a shot off, which resulted in a penalty shot and he made the most of his opportunity as he victimized his former Neepawa Natives teammate by beating him with a backhand on the glove side.

Unfortunately, that lead would be short lived as Tyler Riel scored for the Blues 18 seconds later on that same man advantage and then 14 seconds after that Adam Stoykewich put another past Dayn Belfour at even strength to give them a 2-1 lead.

Then, to make matters worse, with just 42 seconds left Stephane Phaneuf made it a two goal cushion through 20 minutes of play.

While the scoreboard didn't indicate it, the Flyers had the bulk of the scoring chances in the first and that continued in the second, but this time they started to capitalize.

Just 54 seconds into the frame Peters sent the puck back to Cam Stevens at the blueline and he floated a harmless looking wrist shot on goal which eluded Cote and got the Flyers back to within one.

Peters then followed that up by evening the score at 6:20 when he chased down a loose puck just inside the Winnipeg South zone and drove wide past a Blues defender, before chipping the puck past Cote, who sprawled out in an attempt make the save.

Then 4:55 later, while on the power-play, Caleb Suderman fired a point shot wide of the Blues net, but the rebound came off the end boards to Ramsay Fehr, who was parked to Cote's right, and he put it in the open side to give Winkler a 4-3 lead.

That lead nearly grew to two just over two minutes later when Peters joined Nick Lazorko on a two-on-one rush. Lazorko elected to shoot, while Peters went to the net and put home the rebound, but not before the whistle had gone.

That came back to haunt them just seconds later as Chapin Hechter converted on a Blues two-on-one at 13:47 to tie the score once again.

While the Blues had a golden opportunity to take the lead before the period came to a close as they enjoyed a five-on-three man advantage for a full two minutes, Belfour and the Flyers penalty killers did an outstanding job of keeping the score tied headed to the third.

Early in the third period, after killing off another Blues power-play, the Flyers got a chance of their own with the man advantage and they took advantage as Peters set the screen in front of Cote and deflected Troy Kliever's point shot past the Blues netminder to make it 5-4 Flyers.

For the majority of the time remaining the Flyers didn't give their opponents much to work with, but the Blues got a late break as Stoykewich took a shot from the left wing face-off circle that hit a few bodies in front of Belfour, including Hechter, and found its' way over the goal line to force overtime.

The Flyers had some good chances early on in the extra session as they had a partial power-play, but the best chance belonged to Riel as he was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped up on a breakaway by Stevens.

While Belfour had some shaky moments at times during regulation he came through by stoning the Blues leading scorer with a right toe save and that set the stage for Breden's heroics.

With three Blues caught deep in the Flyers zone, Breden, Schneider and Morgan Bell took off on a three-on-one. Breden carried the puck into the zone and then passed it off to Bell, who had his shot stopped by Cote, but Breden was on the doorstep to put home the rebound and give the Flyers the win.

The Flyers will now look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday night when they face the visiting Neepawa Natives.
