Nick Lazorko scored the second of Winkler's two first period goals as they took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission this afternoon against Portage, but the Terriers fought back to even the score in the second and then added five more in the third to come away with the 7-4 victory.
Just like last night, today's match up between the Flyers and Terriers had no bearing on the playoff picture, but that didn't stop them from treating the crowd to a high tempo, physical contest.
However, unlike last night, the Flyers were the ones who jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead thanks to goals from David Kurbatsky and Lazorko.
Kurbatsky's goal came at 16:06 when he deflected Blair Osiowy's wrist shot from the right wing boards past Portage netminder Matthew Krahn, while Lazorko struck on the power-play 2:06 later as he spun away from his check on the half wall and fired home his first of the game.
While the Flyers offense was doing their part, Dayn Belfour was turning in a strong performance in goal for the Flyers as he stopped each of the 12 Portage shots in the first.
His workload would then increase in the second as he faced another 18 shots, but despite his best efforts the Terriers eventually put a couple behind him to even the score through 40 minutes of play.
Defense and goaltending then took a backseat in the third as the two teams combined for seven goals.
Jeremy Dawes got things going when he gave Portage their first lead of the contest at 7:51, while Ramsay Fehr responded to tie the score 3-3 when he beat Krahn with a perfect shot on the shortside at 9:54.
Then after the Terriers took a two goal lead on the strength of goals from Tyler Moore and Mike Audino, Lazorko used his speed to beat Portage defenseman Cody Johnson to a loose puck in the Terriers' zone and then broke in alone, beating Krahn through the five hole for a shorthanded marker.
Unfortunately, the comeback was cut short as Dawes came back with a goal on the same power-play just 15 seconds later and then Audino rounded out the scoring to make it 7-4.
The Flyers will now prepare for their final regular season game which will take place in Selkirk on Tuesday night where they will take on the Steelers in a potential first round playoff preview.
