BREDEN HELPS FLYERS PUSH DEFENDING CHAMPS TO THE BRINK OF ELIMINATION - MARCH 7

With the Flyers and Steelers deadlocked in a 1-1 draw through 40 minutes of play tonight in Winkler, Nate Breden broke through with the help of linemates Ramsay Fehr and Jared McIntosh to score his first two goals of the series, the second of which stood up as the game winner, as the Orange and Black took Game 4 by a score of 4-2.

Despite dropping Game 3 in Selkirk on Tuesday night, the Flyers still held a 2-1 lead in their Addison Division Semi-Final series against the Steelers and tonight they looked to move one step closer to advancing to the next round of the MJHL Playoffs as they returned to home ice.

Early in the opening period the Flyers were able to generate some offensive zone pressure, but a string of penalties helped shift the momentum in the Steelers' favour and they took advantage by opening the scoring.

After the Flyers' penalty killers and goaltender Dayn Belfour killed off their first penalty and then a brief 5-on-3, Michael Wilgosh found the back of the net with a one timer from the slot that he nearly fanned on at 14:26 on Selkirk's third man advantage in a row.

While the Flyers would get a chance on the power-play late in the first and then again early in second, they were unable to capitalize, but not long after their second man advantage came to an end they evened the score on the strength of Ramsay Fehr's first of the post-season. That goal came as a direct result of Harry Mahesh's hard work on the forecheck, as he raced defenseman Paul Sohor to a loose puck and then won a battle for it behind the Steelers' goal, before making a one handed pass to Fehr, who quickly snapped it past netminder Matthew Shenher at 3:29.

That turned out to be the lone goal of the period, as Shenher turned aside each of the Flyers other nine shots in the frame, while Belfour stopped all 10 Selkirk shots to keep the score tied 1-1 headed to the third.

The Steelers had the pressure on the Flyers in the opening moments of the third, but the Orange and Black weathered the storm before they got their offense rolling.

At 7:08 they took their first lead of the contest when some strong work down low from Fehr allowed Breden to carry the puck out of the corner and into the slot before beating Shenher with a backhand.

Then 5:05 later it was McIntosh winning a battle along the boards and once again Breden came away with the puck, but this time he took it right to the net and stuffed it between Shenher's pads to make it 3-1.

In the meantime Belfour was busy turning in his best performance of the series, but Selkirk managed to put one more past him as Russ Payne scored on the power-play at 14:04 to cut the deficit to one.

That set the stage for an exciting finish, but despite some tense moments the Flyers held on and an empty net goal from Jordan Peters with eight seconds on the clock following a key defensive zone face-off won by Tyler Bram secured the victory.

With that win the Flyers now hold a 3-1 series lead and have an opportunity to close out the series with a win in Game 5 tomorrow night in Selkirk.
