Without their captain for Game 2 tonight in Winkler, the Orange and Black had a number of players step up their game in an effort to even their Addison Division final series, including Tyler Bram who in addition to opening the scoring, played a physical role and was key in the face-off circle, but that wasn't enough to keep the Saints from taking a 2-0 series lead.
After finding themselves in a hole early in Game 1, the Flyers were looking to get off to a better start tonight on home ice and they did just that as they set the tone physically, limited the Saints' chances and once again got strong goaltending from Dayn Belfour through a very entertaining opening 20 minutes of play.
Offensively though, while they were able to outshoot their opponents 15-9, the Flyers couldn't find a way to solve Winnipeg netminder Guillaume Perusse, as the period ended in a scoreless draw.
With the Saints taking a penalty late in the first, the Flyers began the second with the man advantage and while they didn't capitalize on that opportunity, they kept pushing for the game's first goal.
That goal nearly came on a two-on-two rush, when Nate Breden went wide around a Winnipeg defenseman and then drew Perusse out of a position, before putting a pass through the crease for Ramsay Fehr, but Fehr, who was being covered by the other Saints' blueliner, couldn't put it into the open net.
While they missed that opportunity, a little later in the frame they finally lit the lamp. This time Bram caught Derek Buors flat-footed at the Saints' blueline to break in with Nick Lazorko on a two-on-one. Bram went on to send a pass across to Lazorko, but while Perusse somehow managed to get his right pad on that attempt, Bram stuck with the play and put the loose puck over the Winnipeg netminder at 12:49.
But 1:06 after that Buors was able to atone for his mistake as he scored on the Saints' first power-play of the game by putting home the rebound of Tyler Mistelbacher's shot off the crossbar.
Late in the second and the first part of the third the Saints had a number of great chances to go ahead as the Flyers took three consecutive penalties, but the Orange and Black were able to weather the storm.
Unfortunately, with 5:55 remaining in regulation the Saints caught a break when Justin LeClair's shot along the goal line from the right wing corner managed to find its' way past Belfour to make it 2-1 Winnipeg.
From there the Flyers went to work looking for the equalizer, but despite spending the majority of the final minute in the Saints' zone with an extra attacker, they couldn't put another one past Perusse to even the score.
That win gives the Saints a 2-0 series lead and they'll be looking to push the Flyers to the brink of elimination with a win in Game 3 back in Winnipeg on Tuesday night, but after back-to-back one goal losses you can be sure the Orange and Black will come back with an even stronger effort to keep that from happening.
