Coming off their most offensively productive game of the playoffs which led to their first win of the Addison Division Final, the Orange and Black looked to even up their series with the Saints at two games a piece on Game 4 on home ice, but Winnipeg had other plans as they scored three second period goals en route to a 4-0 win.
As expected the Saints came out strong, controlling the play in the opening minutes of the first period, but the Flyers weathered the storm and eventually turned the tables as the period wore on.
However, despite quality chances at both ends of the ice, it was the goaltenders who stole the show as the period ended in a scoreless draw. Winkler netminder Dayn Belfour was the busier of the two as he stopped 13 shots, while Guillaume Perusse turned aside eight between the pipes for the Saints.
The second started well for the Orange and Black, but a pair of early penalties allowed the Saints to open the scoring for the first time in the series.
With Michael Falk off for hooking after breaking up a promising looking two-on-one rush, the Saints got a point shot through traffic that bounced around in front of Belfour until Tyler Mistelbacher got a handle on it and put it past the Winkler netminder at 7:31.
The Saints then wasted little time building on their lead as Matt Gingera centered a pass for Brett Chartier, who let a quick shot go from point blank range that eluded Belfour to make it 2-0 just 28 seconds after Mistelbacher's goal.
At that point in the period the Flyers were being outshot 9-0 and things didn't get any easier as the Saints sat back and clogged up the neutral zone.
But that didn't stop them from taking advantage of a turnover in front of the Flyers net that Gingera put home at 12:45.
After giving up three goals and registering just five shots on goal in the second, the Flyers came out with a greater sense of urgency in the third, but while they outshot the Saints 12-8 over the final 20 minutes, they couldn't break Perusse's shutout bid.
Rejean Carriere went on to add one more to the Saints lead to make the final score 4-0.
So with their season on the line tomorrow night in Winnipeg, the Orange and Black will no doubt come out flying in hopes of bringing the series back to Winkler for Game 6 on Sunday night.
