Coming off their best campaign in recent memory, the Orange and Black are determined to build on that success in the coming season and today Associate Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Ernie Sutherland announced the signing of two Brandon products, Curtis Brolund (90) and Blair Osiowy (91), who he feels will help the team achieve that goal.
Both players spent last season with the Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League, while also suiting up as AP's in a handful of games with the Flyers.
Brolund is a 5'11" 180 pound power forward who led the Wheat Kings in scoring and penalty minutes, both in the regular season and the playoffs in 2007/2008. In 39 regular season games the Flyers' 4th Round selection in the 2006 MJHL Bantam Draft collected 16 goals and 20 assists to go along with 110 minutes in penalties. He then went on to score four goals and chip in four assists, while accumulating 38 penalty minutes in six post-season contests. He also didn't look out of place when appearing in five games with the Flyers, scoring his first MJHL goal against the Dauphin Kings on February 17th and dishing out some solid hits in the process. In addition to his contributions on the stat sheet, Brolund also has a strong work ethic and is proficient on the defensive side of the puck.
Osiowy is a 5'11" 160 pound smooth skating defenseman who will be looked upon to bring his mix of mobility, discipline and good decision making skills to the Flyers' backend. Last season he ranked third in scoring among Wheat King defensemen as he put up 21 points in 38 games. While he was kept off the scoresheet in six playoff games, he did collect two assists in four games with the Orange and Black, showing why the Flyers made the deal to acquire his MJHL List Rights from the Swan Valley Stampeders in exchange for veteran forward Naythan Smith earlier in the year.
