Netminder Jayme Janzen and the Flyers penalty killers held the Blades to just one goal on 11 power-play opportunities and David Kurbatsky led the offense with a goal and two assists as they stretched their winning streak to four games with a 6-2 win in Beausejour.
While the penalty-kill was oustanding, the Flyers power-play was equally impressive, as they went three for eight with the man advantage.
However, they scored their first three goals while at even strength. Jeff Sanders got things started with his fifth of the season 1:19 into the contest. After Michael Falk's shot from the slot went high over the Blades goal, Sanders picked up the rebound off the end boards and tucked it in the shortside, past the outstretched pad of Patrick Bruce.
From there the parade to the penalty box began, but neither team could take advantage of their opportunities. The Flyers nearly struck on their second power-play of the game, but Ryan McIntosh's goal which put them up 2-0 came two seconds after it expired.
Despite being held off the scoresheet early on, it wasn't for a lack of trying as the Blades kept Janzen busy. Through the opening 20 minutes of play, the Winkler goaltender faced 15 shots and turned aside all but one of them. Former Flyer Kevin Richardson finally solved him in the final minute of the first to cut the lead in half.
The second period would see the Orange and Black take the lead in the shots department and build on their lead on the scoreboard. Of the 23 shots they fired at Bruce, two of them found the back of the net.
Justin Giesbrecht, whose last goal was an overtime winner this past Sunday against OCN, scored what turned out to be the game winner at 7:48. Harry Mahesh nearly scored seconds earlier, but after Bruce turned him aside, he won a battle for the puck in the corner and sent it back to Giesbrecht, who got off a quick shot from the point that eluded the Beausejour netminder.
Just over 10 minutes later Kurbatsky made it 4-1 when Stefan Schneider found him with a pass in the slot and the San Ramon, California product wasted little time beating Bruce through the five hole.
That was the Flyers first power-play goal of the game, but it wasn't their last as they added two more in the third. Kelby Friesen scored 1:28 into the final frame and then after Nick Stelmack responded for the Blades, Caleb Suderman ripped a one timer past Bruce at 11:13 to round out the scoring.
Sunday afternoon the Flyers will put their four game winning streak on the line when they host the Winnipeg South Blues. The Flyers currently lead the Blues by one point for third place in the Addison Division standings and they have won their previous two meetings this season, both by a score of 3-2.
