After falling behind 5-1 through two periods of play tonight in Portage, Nate Breden's shorthanded breakaway goal 1:07 into the third cut the deficit to three, but despite plenty of chances to draw closer, the Flyers were unable to do so, while the Terriers tacked on two more to make it a 7-2 final.
While the Terriers held a slim 13-11 edge in the shots department after the first, they carried the play for long stretches thanks in large part to an aggressive forecheck, in fact it was their forecheck which allowed them to take a 2-0 lead.
Cory More opened the scoring at 4:14 after Phil Letkeman forced a turnover deep in the Flyers zone, while Carson Rowat made a similar play to set up James Cain at 14:15.
That lead grew to three early in the second when More scored his second of the contest.
However, a series of Portage penalties allowed the Flyers to start building some momentum.
With A.J. Spiller off for hooking, More was called for hitting from behind, giving the Orange and Black a brief five-on-three. While the Terriers won the ensuing face-off just outside their zone, David Kurbatsky came away with the puck. He quickly found Jared McIntosh with a pass in behind the Terriers defense and McIntosh went to his backhand to beat goaltender Gavin McHale to make it 3-1.
The Flyers play continued to improve throughout the period, but the tide turned late in the frame as the Terriers got a couple of fortunate bounces to go up 5-1.
The first came on the power-play at 17:29 when Spiller's point shot was directed wide by Mike Audino, but the rebound came off the end boards right to Jeremy Dawes at the side of the Flyers goal and he beat an unsuspecting Dayn Belfour.
Then 54 seconds later Cain collected his second of the game when his harmless shot from the left of Belfour went through the crease and off the skate of Michael Falk.
Despite trailing by four goals to start the third, the Flyers clearly weren't ready to pack it in.
Just seconds into the period Jordan Peters was called for interference when he leveled Cain with a huge hit in the neutral zone as the Portage forward was looking for a pass.
While that gave the Terriers a power-play, it was the Flyers who scored when Breden beat McHale low on the blocker side after being sent in alone on a breakaway by Nick Lazorko.
As the period wore on the Flyers had a number of quality chances to narrow the gap but they just couldn't capitalize.
At the other end Jayme Janzen had taken his place between the pipes for the Flyers and he was doing a good job of keeping them within striking distance, but Dawes added a couple goals late to complete his hat trick and put the game out of reach.
The Flyers will now return home where they will prepare to host the visiting Neepawa Natives on Tuesday night.
