Lazorko’s overtime magic continued in game six as he scored the game winning and series clinching goal 1:43 into the fourth period to give the Flyers a 4-3 win over the visiting Selkirk Steelers. With the win the Flyers win the series 4-2 and book their tickets to the division final.
Riding the emotional high of two straight overtime victories in games four and five of the series, the Flyers had their sites set on finishing off the Steelers and winning the series on home ice.
For the first time in the series, Gretna native Carey Dyck got the start between the pipes for the Flyers. Dyck replaced Peter Alexander after the first period on Saturday night earning his first MJHL playoff victory.
Ben Ritchie got the Flyers on the board first when his wrist shot beat Steelers goalie Joey Rewucki upstairs giving the Flyers the 1-0 lead 9:43 into the first period. However, that lead was short lived as Brendan Baumgartner found the back of the net just 15 seconds later and the game was all tied up at one.
Josh Schappert scored a powerplay goal later in the period and the Steelers took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Selkirk added to their lead early in the second when Dustin Korlak intercepted the pass from Jordan Peters and fired a quick shot past Dyck to give the visitors a 3-1 lead just 5:10 into the period.
The Flyers hard working line of Chapen Leblond, Graham Fast, and Matt Loopkey went to work not long after that. With those three cycling the puck around the offensive zone Leblond took a shot from the left slot that was stopped. He followed the puck around to the right hash marks and was able to lift it over a sprawling Rewucki to cut the Steelers lead to one. That line has accounted for 20 points so far in the postseason.
With the Flyers down 3-2 entering the third period, they had a little luck on their side in the opening minute. Jordan Neduzak’s centering pass deflected off the skate of a Selkirk defenseman and right between the legs of Rewucki to tie the game at three just 51 seconds in the third.
Despite glorious chances by both teams, no one was able to score for the rest of regulation and for the third straight game and fourth time in the series overtime was needed. And it didn’t take long to decide this one.
Just 1:43 into the extra frame, Lazorko took the Michael Wilgosh pass behind the net and came out the right side of the ice. He came out in front and fired a low shot between the pad and the post for the win. Amazingly it was the Rockwall, Texas native’s third straight overtime winner in as many days as he sent his teammates once again onto the ice and lifted 882 fans to their feet.
Carey Dyck made 36 saves in the win as the Steelers outshot the Flyers 39-33. Although no Flyer recorded a multi-point night, 12 different players made it onto the score sheet.
The Flyers three straight wins over the weekend gave them the 4-2 series win in the best of seven Addison Division Semi-Final, and a date with the Winnipeg Saints in the division Final.
Check back for dates and times for that series.
