The Winkler Flyers have announced that five year Manitoba Junior Hockey League veteran Michael Wilgosh has accepted a scholarship to play at the University of British Columbia this fall. Wilgosh tore apart opposing defenses over his five years in the MJHL split between Winkler and Selkirk. The UBC Thunderbirds play in the CIS, which is the top collegiate hockey league in Canada.
Flyer fans have enjoyed a front row seat to Wilgosh's offensive talent over the past three seasons after being acquired from Selkirk midway through the 2008/09 season. He led the Flyers in scoring in 2010/11 with 81 points (38 goals, 43 assists) in 60 games played. He was third in MJHL point scoring last season. Over his five seasons in the MJHL, the Selkirk native played in 272 regular season games, scoring 114 goals, adding 151 assists, for 265 points. The perennial MJHL All-Star also averaged nearly a point per game in the playoffs.
Under the leadership of Head Coach John Marks in 2010/11, Wilgosh developed to become not only an offensive threat but a great all-around forward.
The Flyers organization would like to congratulate Mike on his scholarship and his decision to further his hockey career at UBC.
