Colten Foster scored twice as the Winkler Flyers won their 2011/12 pre-season opener, defeating the Portage Terriers 5-3 in the annual rookie game. Including the two goals from Foster, Jacob Doughtry, Merritt Rysavy and Dustin Munyer also found the back of the net. Thursday's game was the first of six exhibition games in all and the first of four in as many nights.
Flyers Head Coach and General Manager Ken Pearson was quite pleased with the play of his team, especially the goaltenders. Tyler Oswald and Carson Keck combined to make 29 saves, as the Flyers were outshot 32-20 by the Terriers.
There is around 35 players remaining in camp as the Flyers prepare for their exhibition home opener, Friday night against the Neepawa Natives. Puck drop at the Winkler Recreation Complex is 7:30 p.m.
Pearson also announced the acquisition of 19 year old forward Eric Coulombe from the Dauphin Kings. The St. Pierre native had 57 points in 57 games during his rookie campaign in Steinbach in 2009/10. The Flyers sent future considerations to the Kings in the deal.
