FLYERS GET PAST STEELERS TO EARN THEIR SECOND STRAIGHT VICTORY - JANUARY 22

The line of Anthony Nobili, Jordan Neduzak and Daniel Fainman accounted for seven points as the Winkler Flyers beat the visiting Selkirk Steelers 5-4 on Sunday night. It was the Flyers second win in a row and the two points moves them back into a third place tie with the Steelers.


Fresh off a thrilling overtime win over the Winnipeg Blues, the Flyers were hosting a Steelers club that they had a 1-3-2 record against entering play on Sunday.


The Flyers played a tough, physical brand of hockey throughout the entire game and were reward with some good offensive chances in the first period. Jordan Neduzak opened the scoring on the power-play at the 11:01 mark of the period when he tipped in the Nate Jose point shot past Steelers netminder Adam Harris. Anthony Nobili also assisted on Neduzak's 20th goal of the season. After scoring twice in the Flyers 4-3 overtime win on Friday night, Neduzak finished Sunday's game with a goal and two helpers as the Morden native has recorded five points in his last two games.


With 4:14 left in the first period the Flyers made it 2-0. Tyler Swerdyliak slid a perfect pass to Ward Szucki in the slot and the Neepawa product made no mistake in finding the top corner with a wrist shot. Tanner Jago snapped his five game pointless streak with an assist on Szucki's 18th goal of the season. The Flyers took their two goal lead into the first intermission while out-shooting the Steelers 17-6 through 20 minutes.


The Flyers started the second period right where they left off in the first. Neduzak sprung Nobili with a slick breakaway pass in the opening minute and Nobili finished it off with a pretty backhand move pushing the Flyers ahead 3-0 just 24 seconds into the period. However, the Steelers caught a break just 10 seconds later when Flyers goaltender Corey Koop banked his clearing attempt of a Flyer defender and into his own net to put the Steelers on the board. The Steelers added another one just over six minutes later and the Flyers lead was down to 3-2.


Near the halfway point of the period the Flyers got one back. Ben Reinbolt found Sam Waterfield creeping in from the left point and his snap shot beat Harris over the shoulder to restore the Flyers two goal lead. The Flyers took that 4-2 lead into the break while outshooting the Steelers 30-23 after 40 minutes.


Starting the third period on the power-play, the Steelers struck quickly making the score 4-3 just 16 seconds into the period. However, the Flyers persistency and effort has there throughout the entire game and no matter what was happening in their own zone, they had an answer for it at the other end. Just 42 seconds after the Steelers goal, Daniel Fainman wired a shot from the high slot to push Winkler ahead 5-3. Neduzak and Ian Humphreys drew the assists on Fainman's 15th goal of the year.


With just over eight minutes to play in regulation, the Steelers scored again to make the score 5-4. The Flyers were able to shut the door the rest of the way and came away with just their second regulation win against Selkirk in seven games this season.


Corey Koop made 29 saves as the Flyers out-shot the Steelers 38-33. It was the Squamish, BC natives 20th win of the season. That gives him a tie for second place in the MJHL in wins.


The Flyers and Steelers are now tied for third place in the Addison Division with 61 points. The second place Winnipeg Blues are just three points ahead while first place Portage Terriers are just seven points ahead. The Flyers have games in hand on Selkirk, Winnipeg and Portage.


The Flyers will try for their third straight win when the host the Sherwood Division leading Dauphin Kings on Tuesday night in their final regular season game against them. The Flyers are 3-1 against Dauphin this season.
