FLYERS RUN INTO HOT GOALTENDER IN LOSS TO NEEPAWA

Neepawa goaltender Alex Henry made 53 saves as the Natives edged the Flyers 5-4 in a shootout, Friday night at the Yellowhead Centre. Despite generating more than enough chances to win the game, the Flyers failed to find the back of the net when they needed to the most, suffering their fourth shootout loss of the season. Looking to snap a two game losing streak, the Orange and Black traveled to the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa for their first meeting of the season against the Natives. Winkler had defeated Neepawa twice during preseason. Neepawa had lost their last five games coming into Friday’s contest. The Flyers played great right off the bat and generated a lot of pressure on the Neepawa net. Right after a great Flyers’ shift inside the Neepawa zone, Kyle McDonald gave Neepawa the lead, beating Adam Vander Linden off the rush with 3:52 to play in the opening period. Just under two minutes later, Drake Lindsay gave the Natives a 2-0 lead when he fired a shot off the tip of Vander Linden’s glove and in. Trailing by two goals after 20 minutes, the Flyers had great jump to start the second. Just under two minutes into the period, Scott Gall cut Neepawa’s lead to 2-1 with his ninth of the season and just 39 seconds later, Tristan Keck went bar down for his 21st of the season, tying the game at two, just 2:30 into the period. The Flyers kept their foot on the pedal and had numerous chances to take the lead, only to have those chances snuffed out by Neepawa’s goaltender. The Natives went back in front 3-2 with a power-play goal at the 13:17 mark of the period. Just 4:11 to play before the break, Zach Heisinger attempted to pass the puck across the goal mouth to Josh Cook, only to see it deflect off a Neepawa defender and into the net, tying the game at three. Connor Hamonic earned his second assist of the night on Heisinger’s fourth of the season. The two team’s skated in to the second intermission tied 3-3 with the Flyers outshooting the home side 31-17 through 40 minutes. Winkler would take the lead for the first time just 1:25 into the third period when Tristan Keck snuck in his second of the game between the near post of Henry’s pad. Josh Cook and Shawn Pachet assisted on Keck’s league leading 22nd goal of the season and Winkler was in front 4-3. The Flyers found themselves in some questionable penalty trouble late in the period, and it cost them when Steven Phillips scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal with just 4:24 left in regulation, tying the game 4-4. With Henry and the Neepawa defense holding off the Flyers late game attack, the game went to overtime and eventually a shootout, with Winkler failing to capitalize on their numerous chances to win the game at the end. The shootout was short and sweet as Lawson McDonald, Tristan Keck and Patrice Wren all failed the beat Henry with their attempts and Riley Hillis beat Adam Vander Linden with the second Neepawa attempt and the Natives would take the extra point and the 5-4 victory. Vander Linden (4-4-3) took the loss making 25 saves through 65 minutes. Neepawa goaltender Alex Henry was the story as he made 53 saves in the win as Winkler outshot the Natives 57-29 overall. The Flyers went 1-for 6 on the power-play and 4-for-6 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers (13-5-5) remain in second place in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and will face the Selkirk Steelers (7-8-1), Sunday night at home. Puck drop at the Winkler Recreation Complex is 7:30pm. The Flyers beat Selkirk 2-1 in overtime in their first meeting of the season, September 23rd at home. GAME STATS

QUICK START HELPS FLYERS END THREE GAME WINLESS STREAK

The Winkler Flyers scored twice in the first 36 seconds of the game enroute to a 6-1 win over the visiting Selkirk Steelers. Winless in their last three games, the Flyers got back in the win column in emphatic fashion on home ice. With two regulation losses and a shootout loss in their last three outings, the Flyers returned home looking to get back to their winning ways and keep pace with the top teams in the league. Winkler beat Selkirk 2-1 in overtime in their first meeting of the season, September 23rd in Winkler. The Flyers could not have asked for a better start to the hockey game. Right off the opening faceoff, the Orange and Black rushed the puck into the Steelers zone and Kayden Jarvis scored his second of the season just 26 seconds into the game. Brett Klassen and Reid Burak picked up the assists. Just 10 seconds later, Scott Gall and Zak Hicks assisted on Cam Whyte’s 10th of the year and the Flyers had a 2-0 lead just 36 seconds into the contest. The Flyers had their chances to build on their lead the rest of the period but were happy with a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes. Selkirk cut Winkler’s lead to 2-1 at the 9:18 mark of the second when a centering pass took an unfortunate bounce and went through the legs of goaltender Dasan Sydora and in. However, the Flyers didn’t let that get them down as they went right back on the attack. Nine seconds after the Steelers got on the board, Zak Hicks let a shot go from the point restoring the Flyers two goal lead. Brett Klassen and Kayden Jarvis assisted on Hicks’ first of the season. It was just 38 seconds later that Brett Klassen picked up his third assist of the night on Connor Hamonic’s first of the season and Winkler’s lead was 4-1 with 9:55 to play in the second period. The Flyers took their three goal lead into the second intermission while outshooting Selkirk 33-15 through 40 minutes. Winkler added to their lead with two more goals to start the third. The first was a power-play goal by Jeff Michiels, 3:14 into the frame. Tristan Keck followed that up with his league leading 23rd of the season just over two minutes later and the Flyers lead had grown to 6-1. With the game fully in hand, the Flyers would cruise to their 14th win of the season. Dasan Sydora picked up his 10th win of the season making 25 saves. The Red Deer native played another strong game increasing his record to 10-2-1. The Flyers outshot Selkirk 39-26 overall. Winkler went 1-for-7 on the power-play and 4-for-4 on the penalty-kill. Winkler (14-5-5), who now has sole possession of second place in the MJHL, will have the rest of the week off before embarking on their second northern road trip of the season which begins this coming Friday in Dauphin. After the Flyers take on the Kings on Friday night, Winkler will travel to OCN on Saturday before concluding the trip Sunday in Waywayseecappo. All three games can be heard live on Country 88.9FM and online at www.pembinavalleyonline.com. GAME STATS

FLYERS DOWN KINGS IN DAUPHIN TO START NORTHERN SWING

The Orange and Black built up a three goal lead through 28 minutes of play, and hung on for the 3-2 victory, earning their fourth win of the year over the Dauphin Kings. Kayden Jarvis, Scott Gall and Bryce Enns did the goal scoring for the Flyers who picked up their 15th win of the season. Beginning their second northern road trip of the season, the Winkler Flyers traveled to Dauphin for their fourth meeting against the Kings. The Flyers were 3-0 against the Kings entering the game and had scored six goals in each of their three previous contests. The Flyers opened the scoring, 4:02 into the game when Kayden Jarvis redirected a Brett Klassen centering pass into the net for his third goal of the season and second in as many games. Winkler took their 1-0 lead into the first intermission, outshooting the Kings 12-10 through 20 minutes. Winkler added two more to start the second period to increase their lead to 3-0. The first came off the stick of Scott Gall who scored his 10th of the season and the second came from 20 year old Bryce Enns who put home his fourth. Gall’s goal, which was assisted by Winkler native Jordan Wall, increased the Morden native’s point streak to four games, while Enns now has five points in his last six games. Leading by three, the Flyers found themselves in some penalty trouble later in the period and the Kings took advantage. With a Flyer already in the penalty box and another delayed penalty coming to Winkler, Chance Thomas cut the Flyers lead to 3-1 with 8:03 to go in the second. Still on the power-play, Kings defenseman Ben Hull brought the Kings to within a goal just 1:59 later. Winkler took their 3-2 lead into the third. The Flyers, who had a 10-0-1 record when leading after two periods, protected their lead in the third and earned their 15th win of the season, fourth in as many games against Dauphin. Dasan Sydora picked up his 11th win of the year, increasing his record to 11-2-1. He made 21 saves in the win as the Flyers out-shot Dauphin 27-23. Winkler was 0-for-3 on the power-play and 4-for-6 on the power-play. Winkler (15-5-5) will travel to OCN (10-12-1) on Saturday night to play the Blizzard. The Flyers are 2-0-2 against the Blizzard this season. OCN is coming off a 3-1 loss to the visiting Portage Terriers on Friday night. ENNS SCORES GAME WINNER AS WINKLER WINS IN OCN

Dasan Sydora kicked aside 30 of the 31 shots he faced as the Winkler Flyers held on for the 2-1 over the Blizzard in OCN. Bryce Enns scored his second game winner in as many nights, as the Flyers picked up two points in OCN for the first time in nearly three years. A day after earning a 3-2 win in Dauphin beginning their three game weekend trek, the Orange and Black made their way to the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre in OCN for their fifth meeting of the season against the Blizzard. With two wins, an overtime loss and a shootout loss in the first four contests, Winkler was looking to extend their winning streak to three, in a building that had not produced many positive results in recent memory. In fact, the last time the Flyers won a game in OCN was December 10th of 2011. After killing off an early penalty, the Flyers started getting some pressure on OCN goaltender Devon Fordyce. Just over five and a half minutes into the game, Fordyce coughed up the puck behind the net and Zach Heisinger carried it to the front of the goal and scored his fifth of the season into the empty Blizzard net. Winkler had numerous chances to increase their lead in the opening period, but settled for a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes of play. The Blizzard caught a break of their own early in the second when OCN leading scorer Grant Valiquette slid the puck towards the goal, and beat a screened Dasan Sydora between the pad and the post, tying the game 1-1, 4:51 into period number two. The two teams skated into the second intermission tied 1-1 with the Blizzard now outshooting the Flyers 16-14 through 40 minutes. The pace and the physical play increased in the third period and the Flyers managed to regain the lead just over three minutes in. Picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone, Bryce Enns carried it down the left wing on a two on one. From the bottom of the circle, Enns wired a wrist shot over the blocker arm of Fordyce and under the cross bar giving the Flyers a 2-1 advantage. It was the Cartwright native’s fifth goal of the season and second in as many games. For the next 17 minutes, Dasan Sydora and the rest of the Winkler Flyers held on to preserve their one goal lead and eventually earn their 16th victory of the season. Sydora finished the game with 30 saves as the Blizzard outshot the Flyers 31-25 overall. The 20 year old increased his record to 12-2-1 on the year. Winkler went 0-for-3 on the power-play and 2-for-2 on the penalty-kill. Winkler (16-5-5) will play their third game in three nights when they travel to Waywayseecappo (7-15-2) on Sunday night for their fifth game of the season against the last place Wolverines. The Flyers have three wins in their previous four meetings against Wayway. Puck drop in Waywayseecappo is 7:30pm with Matt Friesen’s pregame show live on Country 88.9FM and online at www.pembinavalleyonline.com getting underway at 7:25pm. NOTE: Flyers forward Scott Gall left the game in the second period with an injury. He will be re-evaluated in the coming days. GAME STATS

FLYERS FINISH PERFECT WEEKEND WITH WIN IN WAYWAY

The line of Cam Whyte, Patrice Wren and Nolan McGuire wracked up 11 points as the Winkler Flyers beat Waywayseecappo 7-5, finishing their three game northern road trip with three wins. The victory extended Winkler’s winning streak to four as they maintain second place in the MJHL. Playing their third game in three night’s, the Flyers looked to put the finishing touches on an impressive weekend thus far. With a win in Dauphin on Friday and a victory in OCN on Saturday, the Flyers played in Waywayseecappo for the first time, fifth time overall against the Wolverines. Winkler had a 3-1 record in their first four meetings against the last place Wolverines. The Flyers drew first blood early on as Patrice Wren tipped in a Connor Hamonic point shot just 1:20 into the game and the Flyers had a 1-0 lead. Before the game was five minutes old, Cam Whyte had scored his first of the game, pushing Winkler ahead 2-0. Nolan McGuire picked up the assist on Whyte’s 11th of the season. Wayway would cut Winkler’s lead to 2-1, with a power-play goal just under a minute later, but the Flyers were quick to respond. With 12:33 to play in the period, Patrice Wren fed a great centering pass to Nolan McGuire who drove the net and scored his third of the year. Jon Carlson added the second assist and the Flyers had regained their two goal lead. Nearing the end of the period, the Wolverines added another power-play goal to get to within one. However, the Flyers had an answer for that one too. Less than a minute after Wayway cut their lead to 3-2, Cam Whyte back handed a rebound past Wolverines goaltender Mitch Wiebe, pushing the Flyers ahead 4-2 with 3:21 to play before the break. Wren and McGuire assisted on Whyte’s second of the period. It was a good opening 20 minutes for the Flyers who led the game by two goals while outshooting their opponents 17-9 in the first. The Wolverines pushed back in the second period and scored their third of the game, 5:50 into the middle period. And just like before, it did not take Winkler long to get it back. Just 28 seconds later, Jon Carlson let a shot go from the left point, and Cam Whyte was there to tip home his third of the game and 13th of the season on the power-play. Patrice Wren picked up the second assist, which was his fourth point of the hockey game. Leading 5-3, the Flyers took their largest lead of the game early in the third. Three minutes and forty five seconds into the frame, Jeff Michiels hit Tanner Posch with a pass in front of the net and the first year Flyer scored his second of the season giving Winkler a 6-3 lead. That goal would turn out to be the game winner as Wayway would make it close at the end. At the 8:58 mark of the third, Rylee Zimmer scored the Wolverines third power-play goal of the game bringing Wayway to within a pair. With 1:27 to play, and the Wayway goaltender on the bench in favor of the extra attacker, Dylan Gejdos cut Winkler’s lead to 6-5. With the Wayway net still empty, Nolan McGuire would steal the puck at the Flyers blueline and skate it over centre before hitting the back of the net for his second of the game, making the score 7-5 for Winkler. Goaltender Dasan Sydora (13-2-1) was good when called upon, making 19 saves in his 13th win of the season. The Flyers power-play went 1-for-3 but the penalty-kill was only 1-for-4. The line of Cam Whyte, Patrice Wren and Nolan McGuire finshed the night with 11 points between the three of them. Whyte picked up his second hat-trick of the season, while Wren (1G-3A) and McGuire (2G-2A) had four points each. It was also McGuire’s first ever multi-point game in the MJHL. The Flyers (17-5-5) will now head home for a much need week off. Their next game will be Saturday, November 22nd when they host the Swan Valley Stampeders (9-12-1) at 7:30pm. The second place Flyers, shutout the Stamps 6-0 in their first and only meeting of the season back in October. GAME STATS

WINKLER KEEPS ROLLING WITH WIN AT HOME OVER STAMPS

The Winkler Flyers increased their winning streak to five, with a 4-1 win over the visiting Swan Valley Stampeders on Saturday night. The Flyers raced out to a 3-0 first period lead as they improved to 11-2-2 on home ice this season. With a week off after winning all three of their road games last weekend, the Flyers returned home for the first time since beating Selkirk 6-1 at home on November 9th. The Flyers and Stampeders had met once before this season with Winkler shutting out the Stamps 6-0 in Swan on October 19th. The Flyers, who had a 14-0-2 record when scoring the game’s first goal and they did just that on Saturday, as Zak Hicks scored his second of the season from the top of the circle and Winkler led 1-0, 3:26 into the game. Patrice Wren and Cam Whyte picked up the assists. With seven minutes to play in the opening period the Flyers increased their lead to 2-0. Leading an odd man rush into the Stampeders zone, Tristan Keck hammered on the breaks in the right slot and fed the puck across to a streaking Jon Carlson who found the back of the net, doubling Winkler’s lead. Shawn Pachet also assisted on Carlson’s second of the year. Patrice Wren then found a loose puck in front of the goal and extended Winkler’s lead to 3-0 with 2:36 to play in the period. Nolan McGuire and Cam Whyte assisted on Wren’s fifth of the year. The Flyers took their three goal lead into the first intermission while out-shooting Swan Valley 16-11. After a scoreless second period, the Stampeders cut Winkler’s lead to 3-1 when Tristan Langan beat goaltender Dasan Sydora over the blocker shoulder, 5:05 into the third. However, Tristan Keck was quick to get that one back for Winkler when he scored his league leading 24th of the season just 42 seconds later. Evan Last picked up the lone assist and the Flyers lead was now 4-1 with 14:13 left in regulation. That would be plenty for the Flyers who would shut the door the rest of the way and picked up their 18th win of the season and fifth in a row. Dasan Sydora (14-2-1) made 26 saves picking up his 14th win of the season. The Flyers outshot the Stampeders 31-27 overall. Winkler went 0-for-3 on the power-play and 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill. WINNING STREAK REACHES SIX WITH VICTORY IN SELKIRK

The Winkler Flyers scored two short-handed goals in the second period in a 4-3 win in Selkirk on Sunday night, extending their winning streak to six games. Cam Whyte scored the game winner in the second and Dasan Sydora stood tall earning his league leading 15th win of the season. Playing against the Steelers for the third time this season, the Flyers traveled to the Selkirk Recreation Complex for the first time, looking to build on their season high five game winning streak. After scoring first in their last five games, the Flyers actually gave up the first goal, 1:14 into the game when Justin Derlago deflected a shot past Dasan Sydora, giving the Steelers the early 1-0 lead. Winkler was quick to respond and would tie the game just 1:52 later. Taking the outlet pass from Nathan Karlowsky, Evan Last carried the puck into the Steelers zone and dropped it to Tristan Keck who wired home his MJHL leading 25th goal of the season. The Flyers would take a 2-1 lead before the end of the period when Connor Hamonic’s point shot kicked off the stick of a Steelers defenseman and found the back of the net. It was Hamonic’s second of the season and the Flyers took their one goal lead into the intermission while being outshot 9-5 in the period. Winkler added to their lead 3:46 into the second when Cam Whyte passed the puck over to Patrice Wren on a short-handed 2-on-1 and the 20 year old buried his sixth of the season, giving Winkler a 3-1 lead.  With 4:03 to play in the frame, the same two forwards had another 2-on-1 on the penalty-kill, and this time, instead of passing the puck, Cam Whyte picked the top corner to put the Flyers ahead 4-1. Zak Hicks and Connor Hamonic assisted on Whyte’s 14th of year. Selkirk would get one of those back late in the period when they capitalized on a Flyer turnover and cut Winkler’s lead to 4-2 with just six seconds to play before the break. The Steelers then made it a one goal game, 9:28 into the third, thanks to Derlago’s second of the night. Both teams traded chances the rest of the period with the Steelers really pouring it on in the final minutes with the goaltender on the bench in favor of the extra attacker. But Dasan Sydora, who had played terrific throughout the game, was brilliant at the end as the Flyers would protect their one goal lead until the final buzzer. Sydora (15-2-1) made 29 saves while picking up his Manitoba Junior Hockey League leading 15th win of the season. The Steelers outshot the Flyers 32-23 overall. Winkler went 0-for-2 on the power-play and 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill. Cam Whyte (1G-1A) and Connor Hamonic (1G-1A) both had multi-point games. It was Whyte’s third straight multi-point game. The second place Flyers (19-5-5) will host the Virden Oil Capitals on Sunday, November 30th at 2:30pm at the Winkler Recreation Complex in their next game. That will be the first meeting of the season between the two clubs. GAME STATS

FLYERS SHOW RUST IN LOSS TO OIL CAPITALS ON HOME ICE

Tristan Keck scored two goals in a losing cause, as the Winkler Flyers dropped a 6-4 decision to the visiting Virden Oil Capitals. The Flyers showed some rust on Sunday afternoon, playing for the first time in a week and just second time in the last 14 days. Exactly one week after beating the Steelers in Selkirk, the Orange and Black returned home looking to extend their winning streak to seven games. This was Winkler’s first meeting of the season against Virden, who were playing their third game in as many days. The Flyers struck first, 6:40 into the hockey game when Evan Last and Shawn Pachet assisted on Tristan Keck’s 26th goal of the season, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead. However, just 33 seconds later the Oil Caps tied the game 1-1. It did not take the Flyers long to get that one back as Cam Whyte gave Winkler a 2-1 lead just 18 seconds after Virden’s first goal. Zak Hicks assisted on Whyte’s 15th of the year. With 4:31 to play in the period, Devan Schram pulled Virden even 2-2. Winkler would retake the lead before the end of the period as Tristan Keck potted a rebound in the front of the net for his second of the game and MJHL leading 27th of the season. Evan Last and Shawn Pachet drew the assists once again and the Flyers took their 3-2 lead into the second period. The Flyers outshot the Oil Captials 13-7 in the first period, but the second would be a different story. Winkler started the middle period flat and let Virden back into the game. Virden captain Ben Williams tied the game at three, under a minute into the period and Schram scored his second of the game, midway through the second on the power-play to give the visitors a 4-3 lead. Virden outshot Winkler 9-3 in the period and took their one goal lead into the third. Still trying to hit their stride, the Flyers managed to tie the game just over eight minutes into the third period. Driving hard towards the Virden goal, Kayden Jarvis tapped in a Brett Klassen centering pass pulling Winkler even 4-4, 8:01 into the third period. Bryce Enns also assisted on Jarvis’ fourth of the season. After taking one step forward and two steps back the entire game, Winkler would take a too many men on the ice penalty with just over three minutes left in regulation. On the ensuing power-play, the Oil Capitals would score their second man advantage goal of the game with 1:15 to play taking a 5-4 lead. They would also add an empty net goal with 22 seconds left to secure the 6-4 victory. Dasan Sydora (15-3-1) made 25 saves on the 30 shots he faced. Virden outshot Winkler 31-25 overall. The Flyers were 0-for-2 on the power-play and 3-for-5 on the penalty-kill. Cam Whyte extended his point streak to four while Keck moved his to three. It was only the Flyers third regulation loss on home ice this season. Winkler (19-6-5) will travel to Selkirk (12-14-1) on Tuesday night for their first game in the month of December. The Flyers are 3-0 against Selkirk this season. You can listen to Tuesday’s game live on Country 88.9FM and online at www.pembinavalleyonline.com with Matt Friesen’s pregame show getting underway at 7:25pm. Winkler currently has 22 player on their roster. GAME STATS

FLYERS BUSY AT THE ROSTER DEADLINE WITH THREE SEPARATE MOVES

The Winkler Flyers added two players and subtracted two during a busy December 1st roster cut down deadline. The Flyers sent G Adam Vander Linden and F Shawn Pachet to Neepawa and picked up F Tanner Hepp from Dauphin and G Casey Parker from Melville (SJHL) before the 8pm deadline. The first move of the day saw the Flyers ship goaltender Adam Vander Linden (95) and forward Shawn Pachet (95) to the Neepawa Natives (MJHL). This season, Vander Linden had a (4-7) record, a 3.12 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. Pachet, also from Winnipeg, had recorded 22 points (5 goals – 17 assists) in 28 games played. Both players were in their second year in Winkler. Coming back to Winkler in the deal was forward prospect Brennan Ostir (99), a fourth round pick in the 2015 MJHL Bantam Draft and future considerations. Ostir has 15 points (2 goals – 13 assists) in 14 games played with the Winnipeg Monarchs of the Winnipeg City Midget AAA Hockey League this season. In a separate move, the Flyers acquired gritty forward Tanner Hepp (95) from the Dauphin Kings (MJHL) for future considerations. In 25 games played with the Kings this season, the Thompson, Manitoba product had four points (3 goals – 1 assist) to go along with 86 penalty minutes. With the Norman Northstars of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League from 2010 to 2013, Hepp recorded 94 points (45 goals – 49 assists) in 131 games played. The 5’10”, 190lbs right winger also had 164 penalty minutes in AAA. Winkler also picked up goaltender Casey Parker (95) from the Melville Millionaires (SJHL) with their third move of the day. Parker, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan played the last two seasons with the Battlefords Northstars, Estevan Bruins and Flin Flon Bombers (SJHL). The Flyers sent future considerations to Melville in the deal. “We’re excited about the additions we made today,” said Flyers Head Coach and General Manager Ken Pearson. “Tanner brings grit and energy up front and makes us tougher to play against. He showed some offense in AAA and was Norman’s Captain which will only add to our solid leadership in the room.” “Casey will give us good depth in goal and we know he can be good for us when called up in net” added Pearson on goaltender Casey Parker. “It’s always tough to see kids go and Adam and Shawn did a lot for us the past couple years and I wish them nothing but success in Neepawa.” Concluded Pearson. The roster shake up brings the Flyers roster to 22 players with three open cards which can be used to acquire players before the January 10th final trading deadline. The Flyers will travel to Selkirk on Tuesday (Decemeber 2nd) where both new players are expected to be in the lineup. You can catch the game live on Country 88.9FM and online at www.pembinavalleyoneline.com with Matt Friesen’s pregame show at 7:25pm.
