The Winkler Flyers Junior Hockey Club is currently accepting applications for billet households in the Winkler/Morden area for the 2014/15 season. Welcoming one of our young players (age 16-20) into your home can be a very rewarding experience. During the season, players will come to the Winkler arena to play for the Flyers, sometimes moving thousands of miles away from home. Not only will you help these young men achieve their goals and dreams, but it also gives you the opportunity to forge lifelong relationships within your community and beyond. The Winkler Flyers have rounded out their coaching staff for the 2014-15 season with the hiring of Garry Childerhose as Assistant Coach and Mark Friesen as Goaltender Coach. Childerhose is new to the organization, while Friesen served in the same capacity during the 2013-14 campaign. Garry Childerhose, who is an Altona, Manitoba native, completed his Bachelor in Personal and Professional Communication Degree at the State University of New York at Geneseo (SUNY) last season. Childerhose played four seasons for the SUNY Men’s Hockey team (NCAA Div III). He suited up for the Winkler Flyers for one game during the 2006-07 season as an AP, playing full time with the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League’s Pembina Valley Hawks. He then went on to play the next three seasons with the Melfort Mustangs of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. “Just coming out of College hockey, he will be able to relate well to the players and will bring a strong work ethic to our group just like he did when he was a player.” Said Flyers Head Coach and General Manager Ken Pearson. “His familiarity with this arena will be key for us going forward as well.” Added Pearson. Mark Friesen joined the Flyers as a Goaltending Coach last season after completing his five year WHL Career (Chilliwack, Swift Current) followed by one season at the University of Manitoba. “We’re glad to welcome Mark back to our coaching staff. It’s nice to have the continuity, and speaking with Adam Vander Linden (Flyers goaltender), he is very happy to have Mark back and felt he showed great improvement last season working with him.” Stated Pearson. The Winkler Flyers have added some experience and a winning pedigree to the roster with the acquisition of forward Patrice Wren (94) from the Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL). The Orange and Black traded for the former RBC Cup Champion, sending future considerations the other way. Wren is a native of Beachburg, Ontario and played a total of three seasons with the Lumber Kings, winning the RBC Cup in 2011-2012. In 152 regular season games in Pembroke, Wren recorded 72 points (22 goals – 50 assists) and 93 penalty minutes. The veteran also had 13 points (4 goals – 9 assists) in 28 playoff games to go along with 12 penalty minutes. “We are very excited to add a player of Pratrice’s talent and experience.” Stated Flyers Head Coach and General Manager Ken Pearson. “He’s a player that competes hard and knows what it takes to win.” Wren is a 5’9”, 175lbs forward who is a hard nosed, speedy, two-way player who can play both the wing and centre. The Flyers are thrilled to welcome Patrice and his family to the Flyers organization.

Graduating Flyers forward Michael Sofillas will suit up for the Huskies this season after earning a scholarship with the University of Saskatchewan (CIS). The Morden native had 35 points (14 goals – 21 assists) in 54 games last season split between the Flyers and the Dauphin Kings. Sofillas returned to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for the 2013-2014 season after playing three seasons with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League. He was a leader both on and off the ice for the Orange and Black after being acquired in a trade midway through last season. The Huskies play in the CIS (Canadian Inter-University Sport) which is the top collegiate hockey league in Canada. Sofillas will be a Geology Major at U of S. The Flyers would like to congratulate Mike for his decision to continue his hockey career and education at the University of Saskatchewan and wish him all the best in the future.

Just over 70 young men will hit the ice over the next four days, trying to crack the roster for the 2014-2015 edition of the Winkler Flyers. With 14 players from last years’ squad eligible to return this season, the competition for available spots will be exciting to watch. The Flyers graduated seven players last season including goaltender Mitch Maraschiello, defenseman Jacob Uglem & Sean Collins, forwards Travis Marit, Michael Sofillas and Joel Allarie along with captain Regan Stire. Flyers Head Coach and General Manager Ken Pearson made a number of moves to improve the club over the off season. He acquired forward Patrice Wren, who won the RBC Cup in the spring of 2012 with the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Canada Hockey League. Forward Cameron White and defenseman Jon Carlson were acquired in a three-team deal involving the Portage Terriers and Dauphin Kings. Forward Matthew Bullard was obtained from the Steinbach Pistons and forward Hayden-James Berra was dealt to the Grande Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League for future considerations.   The Flyers Main Camp will begin Wednesday evening with a series of practices. Thursday and Friday will feature a four team tournament followed by the Orange vs Black Intra-squad game, Saturday, August 30th at 12:00pm at the Winkler Recreation Complex. The Flyers youngsters dropped a 4-3 decision to the Blues in Winnipeg on Tuesday night, as Winkler kicked off their eight game MJHL pre-season schedule. Both clubs dressed the majority of their younger players as they continue to whittle their numbers down. With just four veterans dressed, the Flyers sent a young group to the MTS Iceplex for the pre-season opener. For the most part, this game gave both coaches a chance to see some of the players trying to crack not only this years team but earn roster spots down the road. The Blues got the early jump and opened the scoring just over a minute into the game. Winnipeg would double their lead before the end of the frame to take a 2-0 advantage into the second. Near the midway point of the middle period, the Flyers would catch a break when Liam MacLeod’s shot deflected off the leg of a Blues defender and found the back of the net, cutting Winnipeg’s lead to 2-1. Not even a minute later, second year Flyer Evan Last would take the pass from veteran Reid Burak and place his shot under the pad of the Winnipeg goaltender, tying the game 2-2. The Flyers would take the lead before the break as Chase Fincaryk would score a short-handed marker with 3:30 remaining in the period to give Winkler a 3-2 lead through 40 minutes. Winnipeg would get the equalizer on the power-play in the early stages of the third and score the eventual game winner with just over four minutes to play. Despite generating a significant number of chances during a late game power-play opportunity, the Orange and Black were forced to settle for the 4-3 loss. Trent Sargent played the entire game for Winkler in goal and allowed four goals on 21 shots as the Flyers outshot Winnipeg 29-21 overall. Winkler will return home to host the Blues on Wednesday night in their pre-season home opener. The Flyers are expected to dress a more veteran lineup on Wednesday night. Admission to all Flyers preseason home games is $5 per person. Game time at the Winkler Recreation Complex is 7:30pm.

Tristan Keck had two goals and Winkler native Nolan McGuire had a goal and two assists as the Winkler Flyers doubled the Winnipeg Blues 4-2 in the Flyers preseason home opener. After falling 4-3 in Winnipeg the night before, Winkler was able to win the rematch as the MJHL preseason schedule rolls along. With a few more regulars in the lineup, and playing in front of their home fans for the first time, the Flyers had a great start to the hockey game. At the 8:37 mark of the first period, Winkler product Nolan McGuire was able to find a loose puck in the slot and snapped it into the back of the net to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Nearly 10 minutes later, McGuire passed the puck down the right side to newcomer Cam Whyte who fired a shot inside the near post to push Winkler ahead by two. With 36 seconds to play before the break, Tristan Keck put the home side in front 3-0 with McGuire and Kaden Jarvis drawing the assists. Winkler took their three goal advantage into the intermission while outshooting the Blues 11-2 through 20 minutes of play. The Blues got on the board just a few minutes into the second period but Winkler still had a two goal lead heading into the third. Tristan Keck, who is entering his third season with the club, scored his second of the game short-handed, just past the midway point of the third to restore the Flyers three goal lead. Winnipeg would add another one before the end of the third but the Flyers were able to hang on for the 4-2 victory. Lance Knudson played all three periods for the Flyers and made 15 saves in the win. Winkler outshot Winnipeg 37-17 overall. The Flyers, who have around 35 players still in camp, will host the Steinbach Pistons on Friday, September 5th in their next exhibition game. Puck drop at the Winkler Recreation Complex is 7:30pm.

The Winkler Flyers won their second preseason game in a row on Friday night, defeating the visiting Steinbach Pistons 3-1. Bryce Enns, Nicholas Labossiere and Braden Billaney did the goal scoring for Winkler, who improved their MJHL preseason record to 2-1. Playing the first of three games in three days, the Orange and Black dressed a lineup with a small number of veterans mixed with a group of youngsters still trying to impress. The Flyers drew first blood when Bryce Enns banged home a loose puck just under six minutes into the game. Fellow vets Josh Cook and Zak Hicks drew the assists. Winkler took their one goal lead into the first intermission. The Pistons tied the game 1-1 with a goal late in the second period and the two teams went into the third all square. Nicholas Labossiere put the Flyers back in front 2-1, 2:16 into the third period with an nice unassisted goal. With 3:24 to play in regulation, 16 year old Braden Billaney skated the puck into the Pistons zone and ripped a wrist shot past the goaltender, giving the Flyers a 3-1 lead. Goaltender Gavin Klassen, who has a strong game overall, finished the game with 30 saves as the Pistons outshot Winkler 31-30. The Flyers (2-1) will travel to Steinbach (1-1) on Saturday night for a rematch with the Pistons. Game time at the TG Smith Centre in Steinbach is 7:30pm. The Flyers next preseason home game is Tuesday, September 9th when the Selkirk Steelers come to town (7:30pm @ Winkler Recreation Complex).

The Flyers scored three second period goals in a span of eight minutes, enroute to a 3-1 over the Pistons in Steinbach. Adam Vander Linden made 37 saves on 38 shots to help the Flyers win their third preseason game in a row. Just 24 hours after beating the Pistons 3-1 at home, the Orange and Black travelled to the TG Smith Centre in Steinbach looking for the same result. The Flyers dressed a large group of new faces with a few veterans sprinkled in. After a scoreless first period, Morden native Michael Wirth gave the Flyers a 1-0, 7:46 into the second period. With just over six minutes left in the period, Braden Billaney scored his second goal in as many games on the power-play to push the Flyers in front by a score of 2-0. Winkler kept coming and increased their lead to 3-0 just a few minutes later thanks to forward Josh Brunton, who finished off a nice pass from Holland product Jeff Michiels. All three Flyer goals came in a span of eight minutes and seven seconds. The Pistons finally got one past Vander Linden, midway through the third period on the power-play to cut Winkler’s lead to 3-1. Vander Linden and the Flyers would hold the Pistons off the scoresheet the rest of the way while improving their MJHL preseason record to 3-1. Vander Linden made 37 saves on 38 shots as Steinbach outshot the Flyers 38-21. The Flyers will hit the road on Sunday night for a date with the Selkirk Steelers (7:30pm @ Selkirk Recreation Complex), before hosting the Steelers in their next home game on Tuesday, September 9th.
