FLYERS WIN IN PORTAGE SNAPPING TERRIERS SEASON OPENING STREAK

The Winkler Flyers handed the Portage Terriers their first loss of the season, earning a 3-2 win at the PCU Centre. Racing out to a 3-0 lead through 25 minutes of play, Dasan Sydora and the Winkler defense held off the first place Terriers the rest of the way while earning their 10th win of the season. Coming into the game on the heels of a successful northern trip, the Flyers made their way to the PCU Centre looking for a better result than the last time they were there. In their first meeting of the season, the Flyers fell 8-1 in Portage back on September 30th. That in fact was the Flyers last regulation loss. With both teams trading chances in the first period, it was the Flyers who hit the scoreboard first. After taking the pass from Connor Hamonic, Cam Whyte found Tristan Keck near the Terrier blueline. Racing into the zone, the Morris native made a beautiful move towards the front of the net before depositing his league best 15th goal of the season into the goal with 5:39 left in the period. Just under two minutes later, Patrice Wren scored a one time goal on the power-play and the Flyers led by two. Scott Gall and Shawn Pachet assisted on Wren’s third goal of the season. The Flyers would take their 2-0 lead into the first intermission, despite being outshot 11-9. The Portage Terriers, who were riding a season opening 14 game winning streak started to push back in the middle period. Despite spending the bulk of the second in their own zone, the Flyers managed to increase their lead 3-0, 5:08 into the period. Scott Gall scored his third of the year with linemates Patrice Wren and Cam Whyte assisting. All three players increased their point streaks to four straight. With 3:11 left in the period, Taylor Friesen scored for the Terriers to cut Winkler’s lead to 3-1. The Flyers bent but did not break in the second period, taking their 3-1 lead into the intermission, despite being outshot 10-2 in the second and 21-11 overall through 40 minutes. Portage caught a break early in the third period and scored their second goal just under five minutes into the period. After Dasan Sydora got knocked down beside the net, Garick Gray scored to cut Winkler’s lead to 3-2. Despite some lobbying from the Flyers, the goal would count to put the Terriers were right back into the hockey game. For the final 15 minutes, Dasan Sydora and the Flyers defense would protect their one goal lead and earn their biggest win of the season so far. Sydora (6-1-1) made 24 saves in the win as the Flyers were outshot 26-17. Winkler went 1-for-4 on the power-play and 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers are now 1-1-1 against Portage this season. It was the second meeting of the season between two of the top clubs in the MJHL with both games being decided in extra time. The Flyers lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Blues in Winnipeg back on October 7th. Winkler scored late in regulation to tie the game that night only to lose in the shootout. Tuesday’s game followed nearly the same script only with the two teams changing roles. After a scoreless first period, Liam Bilton gave the visiting Blues a 1-0 lead, 1:16 into the second. With 50 seconds to play, the Blues managed to deflect a shot past Dasan Sydora, tying the game 2-2 and pushing the game into overtime. SLOW START HURTS FLYERS IN LOSS TO TERRIERS AT HOME

The Orange and Black got off to a slow start against Portage, dropping a 5-3 decision to the first place Terriers on Tuesday night. After giving up three goals in the first period, the Flyers got their game together in the second only to come up just short in the end, losing back to back games for the first time all season. On the heals of their first regulation loss at home on Sunday, the Flyers tried to get things pointed in the right direction against this season’s RBC Cup hosts. The last time these two clubs met on October 22nd, the Flyers handed the Terriers their first loss of the season. The Flyers gave the Terriers an early power-play and it cost them, as Portage took a 1-0 lead just 1:33 into the game. Garick Gray put the visitors ahead 2-0 near the midway point of the period, and former Flyer Tanner Jago scored from the blueline with 2:20 to play before intermission giving the Terriers a 3-0 first period lead. Winkler had more jump in the second and started to chop away at the Terriers lead in the first few minutes. Just 1:49 into the period, Scott Gall finished off a nice two on one pass, cutting Portage’s lead to 3-1. Cam Whyte and Patrice Wren drew the assists. Portage got that one back when Gray scored his second of the game, midway through the second giving the Terriers a 4-1 lead. Despite trailing by three goals, the Flyers were playing much better. That’s when Cam Whyte assisted on Scott Gall’s second of the game and eighth of the season with just five seconds to play to make the final 5-3 for the visitors. Dasan Sydora (9-2-1) took the loss in goal for Winkler making 26 saves. It was Sydora’ first regulation loss since September 20th in Steinbach. FLYERS RUN INTO HOT GOALTENDER IN LOSS TO NEEPAWA

Neepawa goaltender Alex Henry made 53 saves as the Natives edged the Flyers 5-4 in a shootout, Friday night at the Yellowhead Centre. Despite generating more than enough chances to win the game, the Flyers failed to find the back of the net when they needed to the most, suffering their fourth shootout loss of the season. Looking to snap a two game losing streak, the Orange and Black traveled to the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa for their first meeting of the season against the Natives. Winkler had defeated Neepawa twice during preseason. Neepawa had lost their last five games coming into Friday’s contest. The Flyers played great right off the bat and generated a lot of pressure on the Neepawa net. Right after a great Flyers’ shift inside the Neepawa zone, Kyle McDonald gave Neepawa the lead, beating Adam Vander Linden off the rush with 3:52 to play in the opening period. Just under two minutes later, Drake Lindsay gave the Natives a 2-0 lead when he fired a shot off the tip of Vander Linden’s glove and in. The Natives went back in front 3-2 with a power-play goal at the 13:17 mark of the period. Just 4:11 to play before the break, Zach Heisinger attempted to pass the puck across the goal mouth to Josh Cook, only to see it deflect off a Neepawa defender and into the net, tying the game at three. The Flyers found themselves in some questionable penalty trouble late in the period, and it cost them when Steven Phillips scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal with just 4:24 left in regulation, tying the game 4-4. With Henry and the Neepawa defense holding off the Flyers late game attack, the game went to overtime and eventually a shootout, with Winkler failing to capitalize on their numerous chances to win the game at the end. The shootout was short and sweet as Lawson McDonald, Tristan Keck and Patrice Wren all failed the beat Henry with their attempts and Riley Hillis beat Adam Vander Linden with the second Neepawa attempt and the Natives would take the extra point and the 5-4 victory.
