FLYERS DOWN SELKIRK TO KEEP PRESEASON WIN STREAK ALIVE

The Winkler Flyers ran their preseason winning streak to four games with a 4-2 win in Selkirk on Sunday night. Nick Labossiere scored two goals, while Dasan Sydora got the win in net as the Flyers finished their stretch of three games in three days in style. After taking both games against Steinbach on Friday and Satuday, the Flyers traveled to Selkirk for the first of two games against the Steelers. With a larger number of veteran players in the line up for both teams, Cam Whyte tipped in a Zak Hicks point shot with 6:29 left in the first to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Josh Cook also picked up an assist. The Steelers drew even in the opening minute of the second period and took a 2-1 lead, 11:20 into the middle frame. Just 54 seconds later, Nick Labossiere swung in front of the net and picked the top corner, tying the game at two. The two teams skated into the second intermission tied 2-2. Winkler would go ahead for good midway through the third period when Labossiere tapped in his second of the game at the 10:17 mark, putting the Flyers up 3-2. Zak Hicks and Brandon Bartley assisted. Selkirk pulled their goalie in the final minutes and Josh Cook was able to catch up to a loose puck and find the back of the net, giving the Flyers some insurance and a two goal advantage. Dasan Sydora made 21 stops in his Flyers debut as Winkler outshot the Steelers 33-23. The Flyers will look to improve on their 4-1 preseason record when they host Selkirk on Tuesday, September 9th in their next home game. Winkler will have one more home and home preseason series with the Neepawa Natives on the weekend, before hosting the Steinbach Pistons in their regular season home opener on Friday, September 19th. Dasan Sydora had his shutout bid stopped with 3:48 left in the game, after another impressive showing in goal for the Orange and Black. Back at home after spending the last two games on the road, the Flyers played host to the Selkirk Steelers trying to win their fifth preseason game in a row. Defenseman Jon Carlson got Winkler off to a great start, letting a shot go from the top of the circle and giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead just 4:20 into the game. Patty Wren and Nolan McGuire picked up the assists. The Flyers extended their lead to 2-0 nearly eight minutes into the second period when Scott Gall and Shawn Pachet assisted on Jeff Michiels second goal of the preseason. Winkler took their two goal cushion into the third period while outshooting the Steelers 25-14 through 40 minutes. Winkler continued to push and came out of the gate in the third period with two more goals in the opening two minutes. Patty Wren assisted on Scott Gall’s power-play goal, 1:16 into the third and just 44 seconds later, Brett Klassen found the back of the net to push the Flyers ahead by four goals. The Steelers finally beat Flyers starter Dasan Sydora with a screened shot from the point on the power-play with just under four minutes left in the game, cutting Winkler’s lead to 4-1. Sydora finished the game with 20 saves on 21 shots as the Flyers outshot Selkirk 32-21 overall. It was another solid performance by the Flyers with a few roster spots still up for grabs. Puck drop at the Winkler Recreation Complex is 7:30pm.

WINKLER WINS WILD AFFAIR WITH VISITING NATIVES

The Winkler Flyers and Neepawa Natives combined for eight goals in the third period as the Flyers got past the Natives 5-4 to win their sixth preseason game in a row. It was the final exhibition home game for the Orange and Black as they close out the exhibition campaign Saturday in Neepawa. Looking to extend their preseason winning streak to six, the Flyers welcomed the Natives for the first of two straight games against Neepawa. After a scoreless first period, the Natives took a 1-0 lead with 8:40 to play in the second. Neepawa would take their 1-0 lead into the second intermission despite the Flyers outshooting them 34-18 through 40 minutes. The Flyers began the wild third period with a goal by Scott Gall just 51 seconds into the period, tying the game 1-1. Evan Last and Nathan Karlowsky drew the assists. Neepawa would take the lead back just moments later. Before the period was five minutes old, Evan Last was able to sneak one past the Neepawa goaltender pulling Winkler even once again. The Flyers would take their first lead of the game with 12:04 remaining in regulation when Karlowsky and Tanner Posch assisted on Kayden Jarvis’ goal making the score 3-2 for Winkler. However, Neepawa jumped right back into it with the tying goal just a few minutes later. With just under seven minutes to play, the Flyers would take the lead back for good. Nathan Karlowsky managed to pick the far corner and push the Flyers ahead 4-3 with his third point of the night. Jon Carlson and Zach Heisinger assisted. The Flyers would get some much needed insurance with just over six minutes left and it came off the stick of Tristan Salesse who extended Winkler’s lead to 5-3 with Reid Burak and Winkler product Nolan McGuire assisting. That insurance goal would prove to be a big one as the Natives would cut Winkler’s lead to 5-4 with a power-play goal with just two seconds left in the game. Adam Vander Linden got his second start of the preseason and made 26 saves in the win. Overall, the Flyers outshot the Natives 53-30. After an impressive 7-1 preseason, the Flyers hit the ice for real on Friday night looking to continue their success into the regular season. A large crowd of over 1000 fans were on hand, and they were not disappointed. Former CJHL Rookie of the Year, Tristan Keck, who is entering his third season with the Flyers scored the games first goal with 4:57 remaining in the opening period. FLYERS FALL IN STEINBACH IN FIRST ROAD GAME OF THE SEASON

The Steinbach Pistons got some revenge on the Winkler Flyers with a 5-3 win on home ice, in the back half of their season opening home and home series. A night after the Flyers beat the Pistons 4-2 in their home opener, Steinbach returned the favor in their first regular season home game. With the two former division rivals playing each other for the second straight night, the home town Pistons managed to take advantage of their home crowds energy and a few Flyers miscues. Steinbach opened the scoring with a power-play goal just over six minutes into the game and increased their lead to 2-0 with 5:05 to play in the opening period. The Flyers responded quickly just 51 seconds later when Bryce Enns tipped in an Evan Last shot, cutting Steinbach’s lead to 2-1. However, just 39 seconds after that, Tyler Penner restored the Pistons two goal lead. The Flyers would get that one back before the end of the period thanks to Jon Carlson’s unassisted goal with 1:40 to play before the break. Before the end of the period, Flyers defenseman Nathan Karlowsky and Pistons forward Jonah Wasylak were each given five minutes for fighting and a game misconduct. The incident also resulted in Karlowsky being given a match penalty for striking an opponent with a helmet. Winkler managed to kill off the entire five minute penalty and built some momentum in the second period. The Flyers tied the game at three with 5:33 to play in the period when Josh Cook buried a loose puck in front of the net, with Lawson McDonald drawing the assist. Once again, the Pistons had an answer and went back in front 4-3 with 1:08 remaining. The Flyers had their chances in the third period but were not able to get the equalizer. Dustin Loeppky gave the Pistons some insurance with just over five minutes to play, when Flyers goaltender Dasan Sydora got tripped up behind the net allowing the Pistons to go ahead 5-3. In the end, the Flyers had their chances to get the two points, despite not playing their best hockey. Sydora played well in his Flyers regular season debut despite the loss. The Red Deer native made 29 saves overall as the Pistons outshot the Flyers 34-27. Winkler went 0-for-4 on the power-play, including a 5-on-3 in the third period. The Flyers were 3-for-4 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers (1-1) will return to Winkler to host the Selkirk Steelers (0-2) on Tuesday night. Puck drop at the Winkler Recreation Complex is 7:30pm. KECK LEADS FLYERS TO OVERTIME WIN OVER SELKIRK

Tristan Keck scored his second goal of the game with 9.9 seconds left in overtime to lift the Winkler Flyers to a 2-1 home ice victory over the Selkirk Steelers. Adam Vander Linden kicked aside 29 of the 30 shots he faced while earning his second victory of the season. With two days off since their last game, the Flyers returned home for their first meeting of the season against the Steelers. After beating Selkirk twice during preseason, the Orange and Black were poised to do the same during the regular season. The Flyers took the play to Selkirk in the opening frame and drew first blood with 5:57 left in the period. Defenseman Connor Hamonic passed the puck up to Shawn Pachet who found Tristan Keck up near the Steelers blueline. Keck then cut to the middle of the ice and fired a wrist shot between the legs of the Selkirk defenseman and over the shoulder of the goaltender giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Winkler outshot the Steelers 17-6 through the first 20 minutes, but were forced to settle for only a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission. Selkirk managed to outshoot the Flyers 12-6 in the second period but the Flyers still led the game 1-0 heading into the third. The Steelers were able to tie the game at one, 5:38 into the third period and with the score remaining tied through regulation, the game was headed for overtime. With the five minute overtime period nearly at and end, Tristan Keck was able to send the home crowd happy for the second time this season. Skating down the left wing, Keck made his way towards the front of the net and scored his second goal of the game over the right shoulder of Steelers goaltender Nathan Park to secure the 2-1 victory. Evan Last and Connor Hamonic drew the assists on Keck’s third goal of the season. Adam Vander Linden had another strong game in goal for Winkler making 29 saves while improving his record to 2-0. FLYERS COME FROM BEHIND TO BEAT THE VISITING KINGS

Thanks to a dominating third period, the Winkler Flyers beat the visiting Dauphin Kings 6-4 in come from behind fashion on Friday night. Trailing by two goals after two periods, the Orange and Black scored four times in the third to remain unbeaten at home. Playing the middle game of a three game home stand, the Flyers welcomed the Dauphin Kings who had yet to lose a game this season. After the Kings took an early 1-0 lead just 3:32 into the game, it was a former King who drew the Flyers even. Just over five minutes into the contest, Brett Klassen and Patrice Wren assisted on Cam Whyte’s second goal of the season tying the game at one. One minute and eight seconds later, Evan Last gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead with Bryce Enns drawing the lone assist. The Flyers were poised to take their one goal lead into first intermission but the Kings had a different plan. Dauphin struck for two quick goals in the final minute and eleven seconds and took a 3-2 lead into the break. The Flyers outshot their opponents 15-10 through the first 20 minutes. Dauphin added to their lead in the second when Drake Bodie pushed the Kings ahead 4-2, 5:26 into the period. Near the midway point of the frame, Flyers forward Patrice Wren was assessed a five minute interference major when he got tied up with Bodie during a faceoff resulting in the Kings forward leaving the game with a leg injury. Wren was also given a game misconduct. With the game getting heated and physical, Dauphin took their 4-2 lead into the third period. That is when Winkler took over the game. Winkler hit the ice in the third period with a renewed passion. The Flyers carried the play in the Kings zone for the vast majority of the period and started to chip away at Dauphin’s lead with just under twelve minutes to play in regulation. With 11:49 to play, Zach Heisinger redirected the Jordan Wall point shot past the Dauphin goaltender, cutting the Kings lead to 4-3. Connor Hamonic also assisted on Heisinger’s first of the season. With 6:33 remaining, Heisinger then assisted on Tanner Posch’s first of the year and the game was tied 4-4. The Flyers relentless pressure earned them another goal just 1:08 later and it was Evan Last who snapped home his second of the game to give the Flyers a 5-4 lead. The Kings gave the Flyers a bit of a scare in the final minute of regulation when they appeared to score the tying goal only to see it waved off due to the net coming off its pegs. With two seconds left, Tristan Keck scored his fourth of the season into the empty Dauphin net and the Flyers would skate away with the 6-4, come from behind win. Adam Vander Linden (3-0) made 24 saves in the victory. The Flyers outshot the Kings 47-28 in the hockey game, 23-11 in the third period alone. Winkler went 0-for-4 on the power-play and 5-for-5 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers (3-1) will host the Waywayseecappo Wolverines (1-2) on Saturday night in their last home game until October 10th.
