FLYERS GET REVENGE WITH HOME ICE WIN OVER BLIZZARD

The Winkler Flyers grinded out a 2-1 win over the visiting OCN Blizzard on Saturday night. Brett Klassen and Zach Heisinger tallied for the Flyers, who took three of the possible four points available during the weekend double header against their rivals from the north. After suffering a 1-0 shootout loss a night earlier, the Flyers welcomed the Blizzard back to Winkler for a second straight night. Adam Vander Linden (Winkler) and Devon Fordyce (OCN) were back between the pipes after shutting out both offenses on Friday. OCN managed to crack the goose egg first, capitalizing on a Flyers turnover and taking a 1-0 lead, twelve minutes into the first period. The Flyers offense once again failed to solve Blizzard goaltender Devon Fordyce in the first despite outshooting OCN 14-8 in the period. Just under six minutes into the second period, the Flyers finally got on the board. Zach Heisinger cleaned up a loose puck beside the net, tying the game 1-1 at the 5:49 mark of the middle period. Reid Burak and Tanner Posch drew the assists on Heisinger’s second goal of the season. The Flyers power-play, which had failed to click the last number of games, went to work late in the second period. With 1:08 to play in the period, Brett Klassen carried the puck across the front of the net and scored his second of the season, putting Winkler ahead 2-1. Lawson McDonald and Shawn Pachet picked up the helpers. Leading by a goal after 40 minutes, Adam Vander Linden and the rest of the Flyers held off the Blizzard attack in the third and earned the two points and the 2-1 victory. Vander Linden (4-1-1) made 32 saves in the win. The 19 year old only allowed one goal on the 68 shots he faced during the two games on the weekend. The Flyers went 1-for-5 on the power-play and 4-for-4 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers (7-2-2) will host the first place Portage Terriers on Tuesday night in their next game. It will be the last home game before Winkler embarks on a four game road trip. Puck drop at the Winkler Recreation Complex is 7:30pm. GAME STATS

GREAT THIRD PERIOD EARNS FLYERS A POINT AGAINST TERRIERS

The battle of the top two teams in the MJHL lived up to the hype as the Winkler Flyers earned a single point in a thrilling 4-3 shootout loss to the Portage Terriers on Tuesday night. The game featured fast paced, hard hitting action as well as a Flyers third period comeback which allowed them to force extra time. Sitting in second place, the Winkler Flyers played host to the first place Portage Terriers who were riding a season opening 11 game winning streak. These two teams first met on September 30th, which was a forgettable 8-1 win for the Terriers in Portage. Tuesday’s contest was an exciting affair from start to finish. After weathering the storm in the opening few minutes, the Flyers hit the scoreboard first. Catching the Terriers on a line change, Lawson McDonald fed Winkler native Nolan McGuire with a breakaway pass and with a snap shot over the glove of Portage netminder Talor Joseph, the rookie gave Winkler a 1-0 lead, 7:01 into the game. Former Terrier Jon Carlson also drew an assist. Mackenzie Dwyer would tie the game with a shot from the point midway through the first, and with 4:35 to play in the period, Garick Gray would put the Terriers in front 2-1 after 20 minutes. Portage increased their lead to 3-1 when Jordyn Boyd cut across the goal mouth and beat Flyers goaltender Adam Vander Linden blocker side, just under three minutes into the second period. Vander Linden and the Flyers defense would hold the Terriers at bay the rest of the period as Portage took their two goal lead into the second intermission while outshooting the Flyers 32-14. The Flyers were determined to get back into the game in the third period and began their comeback with 11:38 left in regulation. After gaining entry into the Terriers’ zone, Shawn Pachet found defenseman Zak Hicks creeping in from the point. After being stopped in front, the puck kicked over to Zach Heisinger in the left shot and he potted his third of the season and second in as many games, cutting Portage’s lead to 3-2. Winkler sure had their chances to get the equalizer in the third period and waited until the last minute to do so. With a mad scramble going on in front of the Terriers net, Brett Klassen scored with just 59 seconds to play to tie the game 3-3. Bryce Enns assisted on Klassen’s third goal of the season. The Flyers kept coming in the final moments and nearly took the lead with a few seconds to go but the game would head to overtime. After the five minute overtime period solved nothing, the Flyers were headed to a shootout for the third time in the last four games. With Jordyn Boyd scoring the only goal of the shootout for the Terriers, Portage would take the extra point and the 4-3 win. Adam Vander Linden (4-1-2) was outstanding in goal for the Flyers making 40 saves in 65 minutes of play. The Terriers outshot Portage 43-25 overall. Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power-play. The Flyers (7-2-3) will now travel up north for their first long road trip of the season. Winkler will play in Dauphin on Friday (7pm), OCN on Saturday (7pm) and Swan Valley on Sunday (6pm). FLYERS DOUBLE KINGS TO BEGIN NORTHERN ROAD TRIP

Cam Whyte had three goals and two assists against his former club as the Winkler Flyers beat the Dauphin Kings 6-3 to begin a three game northern road trip. The Flyers scored early and often against the Kings enroute to their eighth win of the season. After an emotional shootout loss to the visiting Portage Terriers in their last game, the Winkler Flyers began the trip up north with a stop in Dauphin on Friday. The Flyers opened the scoring just 4:40 into the game when Cam Whyte found Scott Gall alone in front of the net, allowing the Morden native to score his second of the season, giving the Flyers an early 1-0 lead. Winkler’s power-play, which had been struggling, came to life near the midway point of the period. Off a clean faceoff win by Josh Cook, Winkler product Jordan Wall let a wrist shot go that beat Kings goaltender Troy Martyniuk, extending the Flyers lead to 2-0. With 6:44 remaining in the first period, Lawson McDonald fired a shot off the inside of the far post and in, pushing Winkler’s lead to three goals. Cam Whyte drew his second assist of the night as Winkler took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission while outshooting the Kings 15-6. The Flyers kept it going into the second period as Cam Whyte, who was traded from the Kings to the Flyers in an off-season move scored his fourth of the season, giving Winkler a 4-0 lead just 1:31 into the period. Scott Gall and Patrice Wren assisted. Dauphin hit the score sheet at the 8:49 mark when Ben Hull scored a power-play goal, cutting Winkler’s lead to 4-1. Cam Whyte then scored his second of the night, re-directing Scott Gall’s centering pass with 6:30 left in the second and the Flyers lead had grown to 5-1. In the final minute of the period, Cam Whyte completed the second period hat-trick by snapping home his third of the game and sixth of the season, giving the Flyers a five goal lead through 40 minutes of play. The Kings did score twice in the third period, but by then the game was well out of reach. Dasan Sydora (4-1-1) was good when called upon, making 21 saves as the Flyers out-shot Dauphin 40-24 overall. Winkler went 2-for-5 on the power-play and 3-for-4 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers (8-2-3), who have a 4-0-3 record in the month of October will travel to OCN (5-7) on Saturday night for their fourth meeting of the season against the Blizzard. In their previous three meetings, the Flyers have a 2-0-1 record. The Blizzard haven’t played since last Saturday’s 2-1 loss in Winkler. WINKLER STUMBLES IN OVERTIME LOSS TO BLIZZARD IN OCN

The Winkler Flyers dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to the OCN Blizzard in the middle game of their three game northern swing. Devin Muir scored a late power-play goal to tie the game and then scored the game winner, just 50 seconds into overtime giving the Blizzard the extra point. Continuing with their three day journey, the Winkler Flyers made their way to the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre for their fourth game in the last three weeks against the OCN Blizzard. In their three previous meetings, the Flyers had a 2-0-1 record. Winkler did not get off to a good start as Brett Griffin scored just 1:54 into the game, giving OCN the early 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later Shaq Houle doubled that lead to 2-0. The Flyers responded well and just under two minutes later, Scott Gall assisted on Josh Cook’s second goal of the season, cutting OCN’s lead to 2-1 just 5:56 into the first period. With 4:19 to play before the break, Evan Last created a turnover behind the net and tucked home his third of the season pulling the Flyers even 2-2. The Flyers out-shot OCN 13-7 through 20 minutes. The Blizzard went back in front just 31 seconds into the second period when Grant Valiquette beat goaltender Adam Vander Linden from just inside the blueline. Vander Linden, who had allowed three goals on eight shots to that point was replaced by Dasan Sydora the rest of the way. Winkler seemed to respond to the change and tied the game again short-handed, 7:42 into the period. After failing to score on two previous breakaway’s, Tristan Keck snapped a shot top corner, tying the game at three. Jon Carlson assisted on Keck’s team leading 13th of the season. The Flyers then took the lead for the first time when Patrice Wren finished off Cam Whyte’s pretty cross crease pass on the power-play, and the Flyers led 4-3 with 8:16 to play in the second. The Flyers took their one goal lead into the third period while outshooting the Blizzard 28-17. OCN was the better of the two teams in the third period and took it to the Flyers in the final 20 minutes. Over the first 13 games of the season, the third period was usually the Flyers best, but tonight would be an exception. Clinging to their 4-3 lead, the Flyers got into some penalty trouble late in the period. With 4:53 left in regulation and on a 5-on-3 power-play, Devin Muir banged in a loose puck in front of the net tying the game 4-4. With three of the Flyers last five games being decided in extra time, and with the Flyers being on the wrong end of all three, the Flyers fortunes when tied after regulation did not improve. Just 50 seconds into overtime, Devin Muir came from behind the net and flipped the puck over Dasan Sydora, giving the Blizzard the 5-4 home ice victory. Dasan Sydora made 19 saves on the 21 shots he faced after replacing Adam Vander Linden early in the second period. The Flyers were 1-for-7 on the power-play and 7-for-8 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers (8-2-4) will conclude their road trip Sunday night in Swan River with their first meeting of the season against the Swan Valley Stampeders (5-7-1). Puck drop at the Swan River Centennial Arena is 6pm. The pregame show can be heard live on Country 88.9FM and online at www.pembinavalleyonline.com with Matt Friesen’s pregame show at 5:55pm. FLYERS BLANK STAMPEDERS TO CONCLUDE NORTHERN TRIP

Dasan Sydora earned his third shutout of the season as the Winkler Flyers blanked the Swan Valley Stampeders 6-0 to conclude their three game trip up north. After taking three of four points in Dauphin and OCN, the Flyers got the effort they were looking for in their first meeting against the Stamps. With a bitter taste in their mouths after giving up a late lead in their overtime loss to OCN the night before, the Flyers traveled to Swan River to put the finishing touches on a pretty decent start to the trip. Cam Whyte, who had six points combined on Friday and Saturday, scored the game’s first goal, 10:18 into the first period. Linemates Scott Gall and Patrice Wren drew the assists. Just under five minutes later Austin Douglas ripped in a shot from the point pushing Winkler ahead 2-0 with 4:58 to play in the period. Evan Last assisted on Douglas’ first goal as a Flyer. Winkler increased their lead to 3-0 with 3:32 remaining in the opening frame. After Shawn Pachet had his shot stopped by Stamps goaltender Lasse Petersen, Tristan Keck potted his team leading 14th of the year into the back of the net. Outshooting Swan Valley 21-14 through 20 minutes, the Flyers took their three goal lead into the second period. Just 4:03 into the second, Jon Carlson and Evan Last assisted on Brett Klassen’s fourth of the year and Winkler’s lead was 4-0. Dasan Sydora stood tall in the middle frame and allowed the Flyers to take their four goal lead into the third, despite being outshot 14-7 in the period. The Flyers put the game away in the third as Shawn Pachet and Cam Whyte scored back to back goals just 59 seconds apart to extend Winkler’s lead to 6-0. That would be more than enough for Dasan Sydora (5-1-2), who made 37 saves while earning his third shutout of the season. The Flyers out-shot the Stampeders 48-37 overall. Winkler went 0-for-3 on the power-play and 4-for-4 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers (9-2-4) will travel to Portage (14-0) on Wednesday night to play the Terriers in their next game. The Winkler Flyers handed the Portage Terriers their first loss of the season, earning a 3-2 win at the PCU Centre. Racing out to a 3-0 lead through 25 minutes of play, Dasan Sydora and the Winkler defense held off the first place Terriers the rest of the way while earning their 10th win of the season. Coming into the game on the heels of a successful northern trip, the Flyers made their way to the PCU Centre looking for a better result than the last time they were there. In their first meeting of the season, the Flyers fell 8-1 in Portage back on September 30th. That in fact was the Flyers last regulation loss. With both teams trading chances in the first period, it was the Flyers who hit the scoreboard first. After taking the pass from Connor Hamonic, Cam Whyte found Tristan Keck near the Terrier blueline. Racing into the zone, the Morris native made a beautiful move towards the front of the net before depositing his league best 15th goal of the season into the goal with 5:39 left in the period. The Flyers would take their 2-0 lead into the first intermission, despite being outshot 11-9. The Portage Terriers, who were riding a season opening 14 game winning streak started to push back in the middle period. Despite spending the bulk of the second in their own zone, the Flyers managed to increase their lead 3-0, 5:08 into the period. Scott Gall scored his third of the year with linemates Patrice Wren and Cam Whyte assisting. All three players increased their point streaks to four straight. With 3:11 left in the period, Taylor Friesen scored for the Terriers to cut Winkler’s lead to 3-1. The Flyers bent but did not break in the second period, taking their 3-1 lead into the intermission, despite being outshot 10-2 in the second and 21-11 overall through 40 minutes. Portage caught a break early in the third period and scored their second goal just under five minutes into the period. After Dasan Sydora got knocked down beside the net, Garick Gray scored to cut Winkler’s lead to 3-2. Despite some lobbying from the Flyers, the goal would count to put the Terriers were right back into the hockey game. For the final 15 minutes, Dasan Sydora and the Flyers defense would protect their one goal lead and earn their biggest win of the season so far. Sydora (6-1-1) made 24 saves in the win as the Flyers were outshot 26-17. Winkler went 1-for-4 on the power-play and 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers are now 1-1-1 against Portage this season. Tuesday’s game followed nearly the same script only with the two teams changing roles. After a scoreless first period, Liam Bilton gave the visiting Blues a 1-0 lead, 1:16 into the second.
