FLYERS SHUT OUT IN VIRDEN IN ROAD TRIP FINALE – OCTOBER 9

Despite outshooting the Oil Capitals 40-36 on Sunday night, the Winkler Flyers lost 3-0 in the finale of their weekend road trip. With convincing wins in Dauphin and Swan Valley to start the weekend, the Flyers could not turn their chances into goals against Oil Caps netminder Marco Audet.

Scoring 13 goals combined in their games on Friday and Saturday, Winkler traveled to Virden to face the only team that had beaten them this season. Cole Weaver was back in net for the Flyers and shut the Oil Caps out in the first period.

Virden scored first on the power-play midway through the second period and took their 1-0 lead into the third. The Oil Caps caught a lucky break early in the third when a centering pass deflected off the skate of a Flyers’ defenseman and into the net to double their lead to 2-0.

The Flyers had the pressure on in the third period but just couldn’t buy a goal. The Flyers had 19 of their 40 shots in the final period. Virden added an empty netter at the end to send the Flyers home with their second loss of the season.

Cole Weaver played well making 33 saves of the 35 shots he faced. Winkler went 0-for-5 on the power-play and 5-for-6 on the penalty-kill.

The Flyers (5-2) will return home to host the Steinbach Pistons (7-0) on Wednesday night. Puck drop at the Winkler Rec Complex is 7:30pm. Advance tickets are available at the Winkler Coop Gas Bar. This will be the first meeting between these two clubs since Game 7 of the MJHL Semi-Final last season.
