Meet Marek Miller, the first overall pick in the 2022 MJHL Draft selected by your Winkler Flyers. Marek is from La Salle, MB where he attends Sanford Collegiate High School. Marek spent the 2021-22 season with the Pembina Valley Hawks in the MB U18 AAA League where he scored 6 goals and 25 assists for 31 points in 41 games. Marek was at the top of his class at our Pre-Draft Development Camp and has the skill set to be a top MJHL player.
When asked how it felt to be first overall in the draft Marek said “It was awesome, it felt unreal. Didn’t really expect it, but it feels awesome to be drafted to Winkler first overall. I couldn’t be happier; this is obviously the place I want to be.”
“An exciting day for our organization as we went through the process of narrowing down who would be our first overall draft selection. With many high-end players to choose from we identified Marek as one that crossed off the most boxes that put him to the top of our list. Being from the Pembina Valley area, Marek is a player with high skill level and evasiveness as he is dangerous with the puck while consistently able to make each teammate on the ice with him a threat with his vision and playmaking abilities. It was clear through the interview process Marek wanted to be a Winkler Flyer and impact this team in the near future. We are thrilled to welcome Marek and his family to Winkler.” Flyers Head Coach and General Manager explained why his staff chose Marek first overall.
“I know that they’re a great team with some great staff. It seems very professional and well run.” Marek talked about what he knows about the Flyers organization. “It’s close to come, it’s well run and a big town, it’s great.
Flyers Director of Player Personnel Riley Dudar was thrilled to have the chance to select Marek first overall “We had a lot of options to choose from by picking first overall and it was a difficult decision, but the more we talked with Marek and the people who know him well it became an obvious choice for us. His mix of Hockey sense, elite skill and playmaking ability is something we value, and we feel he was top of the class at our development camp a few weeks ago. We feel he will be a very good MJHL player for years to come, with plenty of potential to pursue post secondary education through hockey if he wants to put in the work.”
We asked Marek what kind of player he is, and what he hopes to bring to the Flyers “Well, I’m pretty small, but I’m not afraid to back down from some hits. I’m a pass first kind of guy. I just want to win, hopefully try to do all I can to help this team win and get some points while I’m at it.”
Marek, we want to welcome you and your family to the Flyers organization, and we look forward to seeing you in Orange and Black!
