The Winkler Flyers are proud to announce the commitment of forward Zach Nicolas to the NCAA Division 1 Colgate University hockey program.

Nicolas has put up 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points in 41 games so far with your Winkler Flyers. Prior to this year, he spend 2021-22 with the Northern Cyclones of the USPHL Premier League where he had 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points in 35 games played. Nicolas is a big body that knows how to use it and has great vision of the ice in order to make plays for his teammates.

Nicolas talked about what lead him to Colgate University “It all started in December when they first reached out to me. They showed a lot of interest in me and my game. I just came back from my visit, and I got to see the school, the facility and everything. After talking with them there I felt that was the perfect fit for me, and that was where I was meant to go.”

“The Winkler Flyers were a huge part of my development. Back to even training camp 2 years ago when I came here with Justin Falk and Ryan White, the attention and the interest they had to develop me. Last year I was lead down a different path but I decided to come back here this year, and it’s been the best decision of my life.” Nicolas spoke on what the Flyers organization meant to him in taking this next step.

“Zach has worked hard to earn this next opportunity.  He came to camp energized and excited to make the most out of this season.  He embraces the day to day and has shown tremendous growth in the first half.  We congratulate Zach and his family and wish them the best as he pursues his hockey and career development at Colgate University.” Said GM & Head Coach Justin Falk about Nicolas.

Nicolas talked about the coaching staff here in Winkler helping him develop “As soon as I got here, they have given me opportunities to showcase myself, put me in different positions for me to have the ability to show myself and play those roles, taught me how to use my body to my advantage which has helped me gain time and space. They’ve pushed me since I got here, and they keep pushing me, which is the best thing for me.”

We’re proud of the effort you have put into hockey Zach, and we are so excited for you and your family as you take the next step in your hockey career!
