Three-Game Road Trip a Success as Flyers Extend Streak to 11 and Take First Place

The Winkler Flyers returned home from a successful road trip with three thrilling victories, extending their win streak to 11 games and moving into 1st place in the league.

On Saturday, January 11, 2025, the Flyers faced the Selkirk Steelers and pulled off a dramatic 4-3 overtime win to extend their streak to 9 games.The Flyers trailed 1-0 after the first period, and with an early goal to start the second, the Steelers would jump to a 2-0 lead. Midway through the second Niklas Gudmundson would break the egg for the Flyers sending the game into the third 2-1 for the Steelers. With an early goal from Jacob Michelson (his first in a Flyers uniform) the Flyers clawed their way back into a tie game. The rest of the third period would be a back-and-forth exchange, with both teams adding another goal sending the game to overtime. Nicholas McKee sealed the victory with a game-winning goal at 2:50 of overtime. McKee, Niklas Gudmundson, Jacob Michelson, and Kam Thomas all found the back of the net for the Flyers, while newly acquired Andrew Morton added three assists. Leif Ekblad earned the win in net with 39 saves on 42 shots.

The Flyers kept their momentum rolling on Sunday, January 12, 2025, in a tense 3-2 shootout victory over the Portage Terriers, pushing their winning streak to 10 games. After falling behind 1-0 in the first period McKee, riding a 6 game point streak, tied the game midway through the second. Jared Greiner managed to find the back of the night on his Birthday to take the lead at 10:05 in the third. In dramatic fashion, the Terriers scored late in the third to send the game to overtime, but the Flyers held their ground through the extra period and eventually won in the shootout, with McKee and Kam Thomas both converting to seal the win. Andrew Morton and Mathys Blanchette each recorded an assist in the game. Liam Ernst stood tall in goal, making 32 saves on 34 shots to pick up the win.

The Flyers capped off their road trip with a commanding 7-4 victory over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. Brody Beauchemin was the standout performer, scoring two shorthanded goals, adding an even-strength goal, and recording two assists for a five-point night. Early goals from Liam Carlone, Jayce Legaarden, and Andrew Morton helped the Flyers establish a strong lead. Beauchemin’s two shorthanded goals, including one in the third period, were crucial in securing the win. Dustin Bell, playing as an AP, scored his first goal as a Flyer, rounding out the scoring in an impressive team effort.

With these three victories, the Flyers not only extended their win streak but also moved into a tie for first in the league with one game in hand over the rival Steinbach Pistons.
