Winkler Flyers at Virden Oil Capitals February 16th

The Flyers travelled to Virden Monday afternoon and looked to get back into the win column while they try to keep pace with the Terriers for 3rd place in the MGEU east. This was the second match up with the Oil Capitals over the long weekend with another important 2 points at stake.

Virden opened the scoring in the first on the power play (3:11) and seemed poised to put the Flyers on their back foot. Winkler battled back and quickly responded only 25 seconds later on Tanner George’s 21st of the season. Connor Rieger stick handled his way in and scored a beauty to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead, while Trevor Dalton banged in a rebound to make it 3-1 after 20 minutes. Dalton and Rieger led the way for the Flyers, each recording 2 points in the 1st frame.

The second period was relatively tight defensively until the Flyers found themselves on the power play which only took a couple seconds to capitalize after Ethan MacTavish backhanded one in directly after the face off. Winkler was in good position, leading 4-1 after 2 periods.

In the 3rd period, Winkler found some penalty trouble, while Virden made the most of their opportunities, burying 2 PP goals and closing the deficit to 4-3. Tanner George iced the game with 3 seconds left in regulation, helping the Flyers seal the 5-3 victory.

Liam Ernst stopped 24 of 27 shots in the win.

Next up: The Flyers travel to Winnipeg to face the Monarchs Saturday night and are back home for a Sunday Night match up with the Winnipeg Blues.
