Winkler Flyers Reorganize Board in Preparation for the 2021-22 Season

Besides hiring staff and recruiting future players, the Winkler Flyers have also been busy making changes to the Hockey Club’s organizational structure.

In 1980 the founders registered the Winkler Flyers Hockey Club as SM Sporting Ventures Inc. At a past Annual Meeting, the shareholders directed the Board to transition the structure of the team to a Not-For-Profit organization due to the perceived advantages of this change. This directive kick-started a lengthy process that is now nearing completion. The outgoing Board has successfully registered the Hockey Club as a Not- For- Profit Club (NFP) named the Winkler Flyers Jr A Hockey Club Inc.

The new NFP designation allows the Hockey Club to recruit community members for the 12 Board positions who do not need to be shareholders. This change has permitted the outgoing Board to recruit skilled and motivated community members for the newly formed Board. These new Board members are keenly interested in ensuring a viable, competitive Winkler Flyers Jr. A Hockey Club and will be a tremendous asset.

The NFP designation also allows the organization to successfully apply for Gaming Licences (Lotteries) for 300 Club, 50-50, and other raffles, which are much-needed fund raisers for the Club to be financially viable.

The Winkler Flyers organization is excited about the new opportunities that the reorganization brings. Shortly, the Board will announce how fans, volunteers, and corporate sponsors may become involved in supporting the Hockey Club via social media. The rich tradition of developing the players’ citizenship and hockey skills while bringing exciting Junior A Hockey to the Pembina Valley Region will continue with everyone’s help.
