Winkler and Portage came into Tuesday night tied for 3rd place in the MGEU East, so both teams looking to establish themselves in a big contest.
The Flyers dominated the opening period forcing 12 shots on goal, eventually capitalizing at the 7:36 mark as Jacob Michelson scored on the power play. Winkler has been red hot on special teams play lately and have no signs of slowing down. Heading into the intermission, the Flyers carried the lead 1-0
The second period featured more of the same with the Flyers finding the back of the net 4 times. Trevor Dalton scored his 10th goal of the year as he charged the net front and lifted a shot top shelf. Riley Fequet capitalized on the PP as the Flyers kept buzzing throughout the frame. Aiden Jacobsen fired a seeing eye shot on goal, making it 4-0 Winkler with just over 4 minutes to play. Charlie Weaver showed his penchant for highlight reel goals, scoring his 4th in as many contests, as he slashed his way to the net on a partial breakaway, backhanding it past the Portage net minder for a 5 nil lead after 40 minutes.
The Terriers tried to push back in the 3rd period, however the Flyers kept the scoring chances to the outside, while Liam Ernst made the key saves look easy along the way. Jacob Michelson scored his second of the game at 7:36 (the exact time as his goal in the first period), capping off a 6 goal win for the home team. Liam Ernst earned the shutout with a 26 save performance.
That makes back to back shutouts for the Winkler goaltenders (Russell, Ernst) and a total of 20 goals for in the last 3 games. Winkler finds themselves at the top of the league in special teams metrics. #1 power play and #1 penalty kill. Heading into a weekend where the Flyers face the top team in the MGEU west 2 times, things are trending in the right direction.
