The Flyers were lucky enough to have the City of Winkler host their Home Opener Tailgate Party on Friday. The afternoon was filled with games, hot dogs, and some live music. Huge thank you to KB Events Sponsorships and Winkler Minor Hockey for putting on such an excellent day for our fans! It was amazing to see the grass roots, work together attitude this community is so famous for on full display.
The puck dropped for the first full season in the Winkler Centennial Arena on Friday night. The Steinbach Pistons came into town for the first of 6 matchups this season; the feeling in the arena was electric. The first period was a tight, physical game, ending the frame knotted at 0’s.
Steven Foster opened the scoring just over the halfway point of the 2nd for his first as a Winkler Flyer! The Pistons battled back to score 2 straight goals to end the period up 2-1.
Third period brought the grit. The Pistons added another to the tally to spoil the home opener for the orange and black, but in true Flyers fashion the Pistons knew they had played a game in Winkler that night. Captain Kam Thomas and Eric Han ended the last minute of the game with an early contender for fight of the year.
The Flyers head to Steinbach Saturday night for the home and home rematch. Puck drop 7:00 at the Southeast Event Centre!
