Winkler Flyers vs. Winnipeg Freeze Dec 17th 2024

Flyers Earn Fourth Straight Shutout as Ekblad Impresses in Debut

The Winkler Flyers stretched their shutout streak to four games on Tuesday night at the ICON Centre, cruising to a 7-0 victory over the Winnipeg Freeze. Goaltender Leif Ekblad made his Flyers debut, calmly stopping all 18 shots he faced to notch his first shutout with the team.

While the Flyers’ defense limited Winnipeg’s chances, Ekblad was sharp when called upon, showing poise and confidence in his first start.

Nicholas McKee led the offense with two first-period goals, including a power-play tally to open the scoring. Winkler’s attack kept rolling, with Beauchemin, Thomas, Bernier, and Lavoie all finding the back of the net. Owen Wallace scored his first MJHL goal late in the second and added an assist for a multi-point night.

Mathys Blanchette made his mark with a three-assist performance, while Kam Thomas and Connor Jensen each contributed two points. The Flyers fired 53 shots on net, overwhelming the Freeze and keeping play in the offensive zone for much of the night.

Ekblad’s steady performance capped off another dominant effort by Winkler, as the team continues to showcase both offensive firepower and defensive discipline during this impressive stretch.
