The Winkler Flyers have hired Matthew Melo as their new General Manager and Head Coach. Melo, a former player and coach with a strong hockey background, is expected to bring fresh energy and leadership to the team. His experience and vision align well with the Flyers goals for the upcoming seasons, and the organization looks forward to the positive impact he will have on both the players and the overall team culture.
“We are very excited to bring Matt into the Flyers organization. Matt comes highly regarded by his former colleagues and his goals align well with what has already been built here in Winkler. He has a great background in the game of hockey and will provide great leadership to an already excellent staff. He’s excited to get started and move into the community to begin this next phase of his career.” – Flyers Board President Caleb Suderman
As GM and Head Coach, Melo will be responsible for overseeing the Flyers strategic direction, player development, and on-ice performance. The Winkler Flyers are coming off a historic season, having won the MJHL Turnbull Cup in 2024 for the first time in 26 years. Melo’s appointment is seen as a step forward in continuing this momentum and building on the team’s recent success.
“I’m grateful to Caleb, Marlin, and the board of directors for entrusting me with the opportunity to represent the Winkler Flyers organization as Head Coach and General Manager. I am excited about the standard of excellence Justin Falk, the coaching staff, and players have cultivated over the past three seasons. I look forward to contributing to building upon that momentum and am motivated by the potential of what this group can achieve together. It is a privilege to be able to combine two of my greatest passions, the game of hockey and building relationships. I can’t wait to begin investing into the lives and development of the players, those within the organization, and the community of Winkler.” – Matthew Melo
Under his leadership, the Flyers aim to not only maintain their competitive edge but also foster a strong community presence and continue their tradition of excellence in junior hockey. With a clear vision and a proven track record, Melo is expected to make a significant impact on the team and the broader Winkler community.
