Winkler Flyers Main Camp Alumni Team Names

The Winkler Flyers are very excited for main camp to start August 26th and run through the 29th. Many returning players and new hopeful ones will be joining us as we begin to put together the Winkler Flyers for the 2021-22 hockey season.

Main camp this year will be special, as we are naming our three competing teams after three of our amazing Alumni.

Team 1 will be team Harder, named after Steve Harder who played 5 seasons with the Flyers, scoring 188 goals, and putting up 498 points in that time. He was also the MJHL rookie of the year, and a two-time MJHL All-Star. Harder was the 1986 MJHL MVP and scoring leader and went on to play one season with Ohio State University.

Team 2 will be team Sambrook, named after Wade Sambrook who played 5 seasons with the Orange and Black, putting up 184 and 524 penalty minutes. Sambrook was also a two-time MJHL champion as a player, and then won another championship as Assistant coach of the team. Not only that, Sambrook was an Anavet Cup Champion and a three-time MJHL All-Star.

Team 3 will be team Belfour, named after Ed Belfour, who manned the net for the Flyers for 3 seasons, where he was a two time MJHL top goalie, made the 1st all star team twice and went on to play one season with the University of North Dakota. After university Belfour went on to play 17 years of professional hockey, with 963 games played in the NHL. He was also a six time NHL All-Star, won the 1992 Canada Cup, the 1999 Stanley Cup and a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Belfour was inducted into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011, and today is the president and CEO of Belfour Spirits.

We are honored that these individuals wore the orange and black with pride and are more than happy to name our main camp teams after these amazing people.
