Flyers Captain Jayden McCarthy Announces Commitment To York University

The Winkler Flyers are proud to announce the commitment of their 2021-22 captain Jayden McCarthy to York University in Toronto(USports).
Jayden played his entire 4 year junior hockey career with the Flyers, where he scored 68 goals and 89 assists for 157 points in 165 games played. Not only that, but he was named captain for the 2020-21 season, and lead his team to the second round of the MJHL playoffs in the 2021-22 season where he recorded 7 points in 9 games. Jayden was a leader on the ice, but also off the ice where he won the RBC community ambassador award for the Flyers.

“I think I lucked out, having the opportunity to go to York. It’s a top-notch program and they move guys on every year, and they develop great men through their program. The biggest thing for me was the three surgeries I had to go through in the off season and the way they are willing to still take me in and rehab me. It just shows how much they care for their players and that was a driving factor for me” Jayden explained why he chose York University

Jayden talks about what playing Junior hockey in Winkler meant to him. “Junior hockey was the greatest four years of my life. Playing in Winkler was such an amazing experience with the fans. It’s a great community to play in, and drives you to be better with the amazing crowd and support you get from the billets, coaching staff and my amazing teammates. I just want to thank everyone in Winkler for an amazing four years, and to everyone who was a part of it, thank you.

“For over four years Jayden has poured himself into the community of Winkler and the Flyers sweater showing leadership, character, perseverance and resilience. A selfless individual and teammate Jayden left everything he had on the ice for his teammates. Whether stocking shelves at the Food Cupboard or skating with our son’s after practice, Jayden has grown into an immense leader, professional and man and will be missed by many in this community. Thank you isn’t enough for the impact Jayden had on Winkler and the next generation of Flyers. We are excited to see how Jayden writes his next chapter of his story as he graduates on to York University!” said Head Coach and GM of the Flyers Justin Falk.

“I’m very grateful for the coaching staff we had this year with Falker and Whitey. There is nothing quite like playing for two former NHLer’s with the knowledge and experience they can give you about plays on the ice. More importantly the way they taught us how to carry ourselves as young men. Any man that goes through that hockey program will come out a greater person for it, as well as a greater hockey player” Jayden talked about playing under the current Flyers coaching staff.

The Flyers organization are proud to see a player like Jayden McCarthy who has been an incredible player on the ice and in the community commit to such a high quality program and are excited to see what he does in the future.

Jayden wanted to give one last message to Flyers fans. “Thank you Winkler Flyers fans, for always getting the building rocking even when we could only have 200 fans due to COVID. You were always loud, always proud. #19 signing out.”
