Flyers Goaltender Heading To Holy Cross

The Winkler Flyers are very proud to announce the commitment of goaltender and Winkler local Malachi Klassen to the NCAA Division 1 College of The Holy Cross Men’s Hockey Program for the 2024-25 season.

Klassen is entering his second year as the Flyers starter, and his fourth year with the organization. In the 2022-23 season Klassen played 37 games and put up a 2.47 GAA with a .920 Save Percentage. He also played 7 MJHL playoff games where he posted a 2.60 GAA and a .919 Save Percentage. Klassen was named a finalist for the 2022-23 MJHL Ed Belfour Top Goaltender Award.

“I’m extremely excited for the opportunity to compete at the D1 level. It’s been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember, and for that dream to soon become a reality is surreal to me.” Klassen talked about what lead him to College of The Holy Cross “I chose Holy Cross because of the opportunity to make an impact the minute I arrive on campus, and for the fact that they have one of the best educations in North America.”

“My time as a Flyer has sculpted me and continues to develop me into the player and person I am today. I’m extremely lucky to be able to play for this world class organization and without the staff and facilities here In Winkler none of this would have been possible.” Klassen spoke on what the Flyers organization meant to him in taking this next step. “Being surrounded by a pro level coaching staff on the day to day truly makes this all possible. It feels like the knowledge these guys can pass down is endless, and the way they push me and each and every one of my teammates to be their best on the day to day is what takes the development in Winkler to a whole other level.”

“Malachi has grown in many areas over the last two seasons. Becoming a young professional, with the understanding of what it takes to ensure he has the best opportunity to grow each day. Sound technically with a high compete level we look forward to watching him continue to develop and grow the culture in Winkler as he takes on more leadership and mentorship this season to our younger players.” GM & Head Coach Justin Falk and his staff could not be happier for Klassen.

Klassen talked about the coaching staff here in Winkler helping him develop “The development the Coaching Staff provide shifted me from just coming into junior to approaching the game like a pro. They know what it takes to get to the next level and have provided me with every resource possible to make the dream of getting there a reality. From early check-ins to making sure we have time to properly warm up, studying film daily, team workouts, individual skill work with coaches’ post practice, mentorship, guidance through all the ups and downs, and never-ending advice, the list could go on and on, but without them I wouldn’t be in the position I am today.”

We’re SO proud of the effort you put in on the ice and in our community Malachi, and we are thrilled for you and your family as you take the next step in your hockey career!
