Lugowski Commits’ to ACHA Division 1 Liberty University

The Winkler Flyers are excited to announce the commitment of defenseman Owen Lugowski to the ACHA Division 1 Liberty University(Virginia) hockey program.

Lugowski was traded to the Flyers in the 2021-22 season and in 63 games he scored 2 goals along with 9 assists. He also had 83 penalty minutes as he patrolled the blue line. Lugowski is a hard-nosed defender who leads by example.

“The first time I heard about Liberty I was about 12 and I didn’t ever think I’d get to the college hockey level of play. I started talking to the coaches a couple years ago and went on a visit to see what they had to offer. The school checked all the boxes I had, a competitive hockey team, Christian environment, and a chance to get a good education.” Lugowski talked about what lead him to Liberty University. “Liberty has anything you would expect at a NCAA D1 program but at the ACHA level. A rink on campus that the students fill, a personal training facility, trainers, and medical staff. The campus is in beautiful Lynchburg Virginia with the blue ridge mountains in their backyard which makes it feel like home coming from Calgary.”

“Owen has been instrumental in building the culture here in Winkler the past two seasons. Since we acquired him at the beginning of the 21/22 season Lug gave everything he had to the Flyers and the community of Winkler, and we thank him for that. We are excited that he is continuing his hockey career and pursuing his secondary education at Liberty University.” General Manager and Head Coach Justin Falk and his hockey operations staff are thrilled for Lugowski.

Lugowski spoke on what the Flyers organization meant to him in taking this next step. “The Flyers coaching staff played an instrumental role in helping me contact schools and in the end make a decision. Playing in Winkler the coaches helped me to develop my strengths as a player. The demanding expectations on the day to day throughout the season helped me develop not only on the ice but off the ice as a person. Having such a knowledgeable coaching staff has been very beneficial throughout my two years in Winkler, they’re always open to work on things with you or to pick their brain about anything.”

We’re so happy for you Owen, and we cannot wait to follow along with the next chapter in your life!
